Remote Destination – Nip/Tuck

Shows

This week we’re treated to the inexplicable actions of Sean, a misstep by Liz, and Christian trying to regain his mojo, with boring results.

Now for the life of me I can’t figure out why Sean slept with his nanny applicant. I mean was he really that sex starved? Or were we supposed to believe that he was seeking to recapture his youth by having a quick tryst with her? This type of impulsive behavior rings kind of false to me, especially considering where the character has been.

Speaking of “out of character” what’s up with Liz trying to relate Michelle? First off, I’d have thought that she noticed how awkward the scene in the garage was last episode, even from her vantage point. Secondly I’d have to imagine that Liz would have more couth when dealing with someone, especially her married boss, who might be experimenting with homosexuality. Sure they’re supposed to be “family” but c’mon Liz was reckless.

And while I dig the notion of Christian taking baby steps toward shagging men, I loathe that the writers feel the need to spell out the underlying attraction between Sean and Christian. Do the writers really think that audiences are that stupid, that they can’t sense it so it needs to be pointed out by characters? It’s insulting.

However if the episode has any redemption is can be found in Peter Dinklage. He played his role, as the nanny applicant Marlowe Sawyer. He managed to hold sway over Julia (though she’s never been the most steadfast of the characters on the show) and provide a counterpoint to Sean’s line of thinking. And while it’s distressing to see Julia’s made not an ounce of character progression since the series began, it’s refreshing to see Marlowe. His attitude has him playing the same role as the Carver, only quite a bit kinder.
