[SPOILERS] Remote Destination – The Wire 4-5

Shows, Spoilers

You know you’re in for a powerful ride when the episode begins with childhood innocence, or at least The Wire’s version of childhood innocence.

There is so much going on this episode.

For the story of the police seeing Lester and Freemon on the wild goose chase that is looking for the victims of Marlo’s reign is as futile for them as it is entertaining for the viewer. However seeing Lt. Marimow get so flustered about the lack of results of his raids does seem to bode well for the MCU being reinstated.

This episode’s real star is Chris, Marlo’s enforcer. He’s the one who points out the folly of Marlo’s plan to strike back at Omar. He and Snoop also have that powerful scene were they overtly court Michael, who everyone, from Cutty to Prez, is trying to reach. It’s also Chris who pulls the trigger, as it were, on the plan to get Omar out of the picture. And it looks like Omar is going to go down, hard.

Also it’s going to be hard to not root for Marlo now that he’s down with the Co-Op.

Seeing Bubbles get beatdown while Sherrod sits by and watches was almost too much to watch, especially considering how Bubbles first got involved got in deep with the police.

The political story really amps up as Tommy makes some strong moves and Mayor Royce loses some powerful allies. It’s almost tragic watching the Mayor’s campaign fall to pieces. And watching things roll down hill and affect not only Police Commissioner Burrell but also the Homicide unit.

In terms of the school stuff it’s fun to see Prez trying to lay down the law, but ending up rolling over for the kids. And any mention of this episode would be remiss if it didn’t mention the hilarious scene were Prez, the former cop who has locked his keys in his car, watches Donut, a middle school student, break into this car to retrieve the keys for him. Great scene.

But it’s also nice to see Prez’s soft side when it comes to Dookie. It’s almost heartbreaking.

Randy’s paranoia about setting up Lex is really sad. It’s tough to watch a middle school student fear for his life because of the role that he played in a murder.

I think that one of the great things about this show is that it sets up so many different avenues to travel through. Anyone who’s watched the show knows that things rarely have a happy ending. So even with the introduction of four kids, you know that they won’t all live to see the end of the season. Still, the show has set up so many different scenarios by which they could be killed.

Dookie could easily just disappear or get killed for snooping around where Chris and Snoop dispose of bodies.

Namond could easily get killed trying to live up to his dad’s example.

Michael could get killed for rejecting Marlo’s invitation once too often.

And Randy could get killed for snitching. (Personally this is what I’m leaning toward.)

I really can’t wait for next week’s episode.
