5 Thoughts on Saturday Night’s Main Event – 08.02.2008

Reviews, Shows, Top Story, TV Shows

Let’s do this…

1) I liked the intro video to the show, but back when SNME first came back, they went old school with the main eventers cutting promos straight to the camera leading into the opening theme song, and kinda wish they would do that. You’re only getting hardcore fans watching anyway, and maybe some nostalgic fans from the 80s, so why not play to that?

2) Ah the ol’ SNME trick of opening the night with the main event. JBL of course snuck a win when JTG was too confused to realize who the legal man in the ring was, and the heel team (also Kane/DiBiase/Rhodes) beat the faces (Cryme Tyme, Cena and Batista) to start off the night. Solid TV match, totally not boring, and I’ll tell ya what: I never wanna take a Clothesline from Hell. EVER.

3) Oh and on commentary we have JR, Jerry Lawler, and (for the first match) World Champ CM Punk. Great job by all three men, and we still don’t know which of the 40 title contenders will face Punk at SummerSlam (and we’re just over two weeks away).

4) Uh oh, The Great Khali vs. Jimmy Wang Yang. Who do Y’ALL think will win? One hint: pinfall came after a tree slam.

5) Finally, we have Jeff Hardy vs. Edge in just a great (I guess second) main event. Let me say first that I can’t get enough of the recaps of the Edge/Vickie/Alicia storyline, which just reeks of awesomeness, and Mick Foley’s incredible interview on Friday’s “Cutting Edge” segment. Edge really has been WWE’s best performer all-around for the last six months to a year. Back to the match, Jeff “The I Guess TNA Let the Trademark Run Out on Charismatic Enigma” Hardy pulled out all the stops, including a Whisper in the Wind and sitout somethingorother, and sold his left knee like a pro from pretty much the beginning of the match… while Edge was pretty aggressive, hitting the Edgecution and eventually his signature spear to put Jeff out of his misery (with a little help from MVP) and pull out the win. Solid match-up and good end to the show that, interestingly enough, saw all three heels victorious.

I won’t make this a “thought” but more a summary, due to the overall theme of the show (aside from pushing SummerSlam). Stars like Jeff Foxworthy, Carmen Electra and Ben Stiller were sprinkled throughout the show – as they have been for a week or two – talking about autism and supporting Jenny McCarthy’s Generation Rescue organization, asking people to go to WWE.com and make a donation. Jenny was really good in her segment in front of the audience. She also did an interview on WWE.com with Todd Grisham and I think it was a pretty classy move for the company to do so much to help out a good cause.
