Smith, Sobral Victorious

SAN JOSE, Calif – Former UFC and EliteXC fighter Scott Smith proved that “Hands of Steel” is more than just a nickname, knocking out former UFC star Terry Martin in just 24 seconds to earn a victory in his Strikeforce debut on Friday night.

“I knew this fight wasn’t going to go long,” Smith said after the fight. “I stepped in there and as soon as we engaged, I just felt it, man. I knew this fight was going to end soon.”

In the night’s co-feature, the controversial Renato “Babalu” Sobral opened up a nasty gash over the eye of Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Bobby Southworth. Southworth was ruled unable to continue, and Sobral was awarded the light heavyweight championship. This fight was the first time in recent memory that a champion went into a mixed martial arts fight as a three to one underdog.

Kim Couture has made news in recent weeks as part of a stand-off with former Affliction owner Todd Beard, but on Friday night she made news by scoring her first professional mixed martial arts victory. Couture scored a TKO at 1:45 of the first round when her opponent, Lina Kvokov, could seemingly do nothing but cover up her head and run away. Kvokov was severely overmatched against Couture and likely was brought in to get Couture an easy win in front of a live crowd. Mission accomplished.
