Several individual favorites, one underdog movie and broadcast TV all enjoyed good nights at the Screen Actors Guild Awards Sunday.
Slumdog Millionaire won the award for best ensemble in a motion picture, continuing its recent string of awards success (the movie also won the Producers Guild of America honor for best picture over the weekend). The film won the cast honor despite receiving only one individual nomination from the actors guild, for Dev Patel.
Oscar winners Sean Penn and Meryl Streep took home the awards for lead acting for their roles in Milk and Doubt, respectively. Heath Ledger picked up another posthumous honor for The Dark Knight, which co-star Gary Oldman accepted on his behalf.
James Earl Jones was honored with the guild’s lifetime achievement award.
In the TV categories, network shows had a leg up on cable, which hasn’t often been the case in recent awards-show history. Paul Giamatti and Laura Linney each picked up another award for HBO’s John Adams, and AMC’s Mad Men won the best drama ensemble honor, but actors on network shows won the other categories. NBC’s 30 Rock made a clean sweep of the comedy series categories.
