Chuck – Episode 2-21 Review

Shows, Top Story

There was no doubt this week that the season (and hopefully not series) finale of Chuck was fast approaching. Chuck and Sarah expressed their feelings physically, the Intersect was removed from Chuck’s brain, Awesome found out that Chuck, Sarah, and Casey are spies, Chuck freed his father in time for Awesome and Ellie’s wedding and Morgan quit the Buy-More to move to Hawaii. It was a busy week.

After two seasons of dancing around the issue, Chuck and Sarah finally shared their first kiss this week (first one where they weren’t expecting to be blown up seconds later at least). I don’t expect them to actually get together anytime soon (as work is bound to get in the way again), but it is good to see some forward progress in their relationship after a season of standing still.

The first hurdle in Chuck and Sarah’s hook-up was Casey (well, technically Morgan with the condom borrowing, but that was a rather minor hurdle). It seemed kind of odd that General Beckman would send Casey after Sarah and Chuck on his own. It was only a couple episodes back that Casey stood up for Sarah and told the general that Agent Walker was the best partner he had ever had. As such, you would think that Beckman would want another agent around not only to help Casey but to ensure that Casey stayed on mission.

The battles between Sarah, Casey, and Chuck were entertaining though. And Casey’s inevitable decision to disobey orders to help his friends brought a smile to my face.

It was good to see Chuck win his freedom. For a few days, at least, he can be a normal guy living a normal life. We all know that there’s no way that it will last, but it is still nice to see Chuck get a little happiness.

The real question is how does Chuck become the Intersect again. There are three possibilities I can think of, one is that the “cure” will simply wear off, the second is that somehow Chuck will be re-exposed against his will, and the third, and most likely option, is that Chuck will choose to become the Intersect once more (probably in order to save a loved one or stop a FULCRUM plot).

I am also kind of worried about Awesome’s chances of making it through next week alive. Of the people in Chuck’s life, Morgan or Ellie finding out he was a spy would have far more impact than Awesome finding out.

There are only two reasons I can think of for Awesome to be the first to find out Chuck is a spy. One is that they just want to use Awesome’s knowledge for comic relief as he clumsily tries to cover for Chuck’s myriad of absences. The other is because Awesome is going to be killed off and thus unable to share his knowledge with anyone anyway.

We already saw Awesome’s partial knowledge of Chuck’s secret used for comic relief this week but by the end of the episode he seemed to have adjusted and was doing a good job of covering for his soon to be brother-in-law’s absence. And with an angry Roark on the way to Ellie and Awesome’s wedding next week, that leaves an Awesome death as a distinctly un-awesome possibility (come to think of it, if Awesome and Ellie both died that would give Chuck a pretty solid reason to want to become the Intersect again to go after FULCRUM).

“Chuck versus The Colonel” may well end up being the second last episode of Chuck. Hopefully that is not the case, but if it is, at least nobody can say the show isn’t going out with style.

Trevor MacKay is the sci-fi/horror/fantasy/cheesy/random geeky stuff guy. If something is geeky and/or unbelievably cheesy, he’s there.
