This Week In Indies

Columns, Features

This was a huge week on the indy wrestling scene! ROH’s Danielson following in Punk’s footsteps, CZW has been sold, and a wrestler suffers serious injury. I’ll try to touch on as many as I can but it was hopping all across the US this past week. We had a debut and some old friends doing it up. On to the Indies this week!

Our first stop on this trip: Flint, Michigan! Flint, MI was reportedly taken hostage by the MWO (Michigan Wrestling Organization) as Double Jeopardy, in the main event against Platinum and Clouse ended in an upset with DJ capturing the belts. Big Bubba Blackwell (reminiscent of Haystack imo) took on and took out Kamash. In other matches were Hell on Earth over the Steele Brothers, The Elite won a battle of Revolution X by count out, Leo Adonis took a tough loss via Kremlin, Steven Blade and Kuzin also got wins over their opponents.

Our next stop lands in beautiful Brookhaven, Mississippi as the BIW (Bayou Independent Wrestling) hit the pavement running. There was one title match where defending champion Steve Anthony stayed on top of opponent Micah Taylor long enough to retain the Southern Championship. Also in action were the Crazy Cowboys over the Inner Circle in a non-title match (scared guys? Hmmmm…), Dallas Riley lost a tough one to J Awesome, Angel Blue didn’t get it done against Tracy Taylor, and Vordell over Gemini.

We continue our southern travels by hitting up Marshall, TX and the ACW (American Championship Wrestling). I will say with only 4 matches this was a disappointing card for all in attendance but hey – what else do you do in Marshall, TX? Eightball took a win over Sam Sellers, in the “battle of the Prestons” Chris went over Hunter, Colton Shane couldn’t get it done over Scott Murdoch, and Curt Raines fought Blake the Brawler to a Double DQ.

Freeland, PA was the location of a World Wide Wrestling Alliance show and, unfortunately, the only information I have about it is that the wrestler known as The Gravedigger may have broken the neck of his opponent. Nothing has been confirmed but the police were called and a whole big thing was made out of it. This apparently didn’t faze the Gravedigger as he was reportedly smiling and having a great time later! If I hear more about this situation, good or bad, I’ll try my best to report on it!

Let’s move to the Northeast for a bit stopping in Marysville, PA as Classic Championship Wrestling rolls back into town. The CCW entertained a sold out crowd with some impressive matches. TJ Cannon and Bruce Maxwell got the cheap win over Jordan and Graham while Maxwell held down Jordan’s’ legs until the 3-count was reached. Dominik Monroe took a tough loss to Karloff, Lobo Loco lost his tables match against Big Hink, J Money became the new CCW Tradition Champion by defeating “ Preacher” John Cannon who had appeared earlier in the night as “The Cabbie” and took a beating. The main event was a scaffold match ala Starcade having CCW Champion Vargas along with his partners Petey Noxious and D-Licious beating Jason Gotti, Mikey Wraith, and Rob Noxious. Look out for CCW to return October, 24th! For more info check them out at http://www.ccwindy.com!

On to Tuckerman, Arkansas and the ASWF (All-Star Wrestling Federation). Chuck Fears got some serious heat as Tommy Wayne called him out to confront him about costing X-Kaliber the ASWF Championship against Casino. Fears hit the ring but was stopped cold when X-Kaliber nailed him from behind! He refused to put the Euro belt on the line and instead challenged Casino and Chuck to a tag team bout against himself and Tommy. In other action Vinny Romono defeated Scott Fury, Christopher Lee won over Joshua Cross, The Beach Bums retained their tag belts over LSD. There was a lot more action to be seen so check ‘em out on the web @ http://www.aswfwrestling.com!

On to Des Moines, Iowa and the folks at 3XW who had a night of awesome action as they presented the FIRST “King of Des Moines Tournament”. Jimmy Rockwell retained his Cruiserweight title against Ryan Slade for the first round. The team of the High Flyers won the 3XW tag straps from defending champions Gentleman’s Club in a heated and close competition. AJ Smooth and Tony Slay advance against McDowell and Masterson in the fatal 4-way. See all the results and some vids at http://www.3xwrestling.com and get ready for their next event Sept 18th in Des Moines featuring Al Snow and Sheik Abdul Bashir!

If you are in Georgia this Friday and get down to Royston check out APW (Alternative Pro Wrestling) as the show is only $5 and they have one every week! I was going to report on their results but you can see for yourself on APW Aftershock on YouTube: www.youtube.com/alternativepro but a brief rundown anyway for you all.. Jamie Lee over Vinnie Valentine, Kareem Abdul Jamar defeated Stryknyn, and much more! Check out the link.

Think I’m done? Nope. Not in the least. A quick announcement! This Sunday if you’re in Allentown, PA take a trip over to Cedar Beach and participate in the LVW cookout! I think this is great for fans to interact with the wrestlers and get some food too! $5 for the cookout (unless you’re a VIP ticket holder) so check it out at http://www.lvw-wrestling.com and meet the stars of the LVW as they serve YOU food!

Ok – next we hit up the folks up at Pro Wrestling Fusion in Daytona, FL! PWF is part of the NWA family and on the 22nd they held a show featuring TNA Knockout Awesome Kong and wrestling legend 2 Cold Scorpio! The quick rundown of the show: Steve Madison over Francisco Ciatsu, Tommy Taylor over the 7’1” Titan, awesome Kong and Sumie Sakai fought to a 6 minute finish with Kong on top, The Sheik over Scorpio is a brilliant 14 minute fight! Check out http://www.prowrestlingfusion.com for more matches and results and if you’re around the Daytona area Sept. 5th check them out as Wrestling for a Cause and NWA Midwest present PWF’s “American Wrestleution 2”.

Next up: Berwick, PA where ICWF  Universal had its debut card. The crowd was VERY vocal and the matches VERY good as the promotion’s school’s first graduates, Shawn Andrews and Aaron Scott, faced Psychotic Erotic in their first night out! The hometown boys lost then turned on the fans like vicious bulldogs! In other action was the New Franchise taking on International Superstar Kage and IB Green, The Unholy Altar Boy in his ICWF-U debut over Luchadore sensation El Orreo, The Fiend’s Club was in action along with Mac Robo coming out of retirement to enter the 15-man battle royal! The next card is to be announced within the next few weeks so look for them on MySpace!

On to the garden state and Pro-Wrestling WORLD-1 in Jackson, NJ! World-1 brings in many great stars from the indies to put on a hell of a show and this was no different. Corey Kastle lost by a schoolboy pin from B4W’s American Kid, In the WORLD-1 HW Title rubber match Steve Corino (on behalf of Survivor) defeated Greg Spitz (of FreeBIRD), The Beast (of B4W), and Tommy Thunda (of B4W) in a 4-way dance to win the strap for the first time! For more results and information on the 2nd annual Shinya Hashimoto Memorial Tournament to be held August 28th check out http://www.world1online.com!

When Larry Zbyszko makes an appearance in an indie you kind of have to cover it so I will wrap this week up with I Believe In Wrestling’s card that took place this past week in Orlando, FL. The card started off with the Heartbreak Express beating The James Boys (who recently wrestled for RCW in PA), Josh Rayne was taken out by Ray Beez when he landed a Misawa inspired discus clothesline, and in a 17+ minute match the SCW Florida Heavyweight Champion Chasyn Rance beat Zoe after Mr. Zbyszko interfered!

As always if you got an indy show you want to promote, an event you want people to know, or results you want to have covered then step up! I can’t find you all on my own! Drop me an e-mail and I’ll see what I can do!

Anyway – I need a nap..

Well – I was going to take a nap when some late breaking news came to my hands by way of Dr. Keith Lipinski. I’m sad to announce that after several years of lackluster crowds and only slightly better-than-average DVD sales, Ian Rotten’s IWA Mid-South Wrestling is closing its doors. This Friday is the last show for the promotion as they present the Kings of the Crimson Mask Tournament in Bellevue. If you have tickets for any future events send a picture of the tickets or a copy of the PayPal receipt to:

IWA Mid-South
PO Box 647
Morris, IL 60450

Necro Butcher will no longer be a part of the final show so the IWA is going out like it came in: a rematch from their very first show: Ian Rotten vs. Mad Man Pondo. Expect a bloody and crazy affair!

Ok, so now.. really.. a nap..
