First Trailer for Bruckheimer's Prince of Persia

The first trailer to Jerry Bruckheimer’s big budget summer blockbuster adaptation of Ubisoft’s action-adventure video game franchise Prince of Persia is here. I don’t know much about the series, having played a few demos here and there on PlayStation, but I guess Bruckheimer’s trying to get the most out of his $200 million film. It has the vibe of Pirates of the Caribbean crossed with The Mummy and starring the illegitimate son of Billy Ray Cyrus. But it could just be the movie that actually makes for a good video game to movie translation.

Dastan (Jake Gyllenhaal) is a street urchin in 6th century Persia. After showing valor in battle, he is adopted by the king as his heir, so the king’s two sons will not fight over the throne. He teams up with Princess Tamina to rescue the Sands of Time, a gift from the gods that controls time, from the hands of the villainous nobleman, Nizam.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is the latest cinematic endeavor for director Mike Newell, of Love in the Time of Cholera, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Donnie Brasco and Four Weddings and a Funeral previously; and from uber producer Jerry Bruckheimer, who gave us the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy, G-Force and Confessions of a Shopaholic. (For what it’s worth, his last venture into rated R territory was 2003’s Bad Boys II.) Joining Gyllenhaal, the supporting cast consists of Gemma Arterton (Quantum of Solace, Pirate Radio), Ben Kingsley and Alfred Molina.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time arrives in theatres May 28, 2010.
