Johnny Depp in Talks for The Tourist

Casting News, News, Rumors

The Tourist is turning into the casting carousel of 2009. Originally, the film was to be headlined by Tom Cruise and Charlize Theron. Cruise bowed out to make Knight and Day and Theron followed thereafter. So Sam Worthington and Angelina Jolie were cast in the roles. But then Sam Worthington and director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck bowed out because of creative differences, leaving only Jolie.

But now she could have a co-star if Johnny Depp is indeed signs on to play an American tourist drawn into a web of intrigue by a female Interpol agent (Jolie) who is trying to locate a criminal who is her former lover.

Variety says Alfonso Cuaron is already showing an interest in picking up where von Donnersmarck left off. If he does decide to direct, it will be his first feature film since 2006’s Children of Men.

Julian Fellowes wrote the originally script and Christopher McQuarrie (The Usual Suspects, The Way of the Gun) and Jeffrey Nachmanoff (Traitor) provided rewrites.

The emergence of Depp is somewhat of a surprise being that he was expected to make his next either the fourth installment of Pirates of the Caribbean or The Lone Ranger.

Either way, the idea of Depp and Jolie being paired together does have the potential for a very good film. And with Cuaron possibly at the helm there really seems no reason for this film to turn out bad. I for one am very excited about this prospect!
