ROH News – Final Battle matches, Pick 6 Contenders Series, WM weekend update, and MUCH more

News

The following news items were posted on the November 10th edition of the ROH Newswire:

ROH’s negotiations with AAA have come to fruition. Alex Koslov and Rocky Romero will be appearing at the Manassas, VA show on December 18th and at Final Battle 2009 (New York City, December 19th). It sounds like they will be facing each other at both of those shows.

Also at Final Battle, The Briscoes will challenge The American Wolves for the ROH Tag Team Titles. Click here for Holdren McNeil’s piece on this match-up.

ROH has announced the “Pick 6 Contenders Series” (sponsored by Pro Wrestling Illustrated) as its new way of determining ROH World Title Contenders. The rules are as follows:

– Only wrestlers ranked in the “Pick 6” are eligible to challenge for the ROH World Championship. Championship matches scheduled prior to the advent of the Pick 6 will take place.
– The higher a wrestler is seeded, the more leverage he has in determining the scheduling of championship matches.
– Wrestlers securing victories in “Pick 6” matchups earn a match bonus.
– Once the rankings are set, wrestlers can only enter the “Pick 6” Standings by defeating a ranked wrestler.
– A ranked wrestler that defeats a higher seeded wrestler assumes that spot in the Pick 6. The losing wrestler and those ranked lower drop one spot in the standings.
– An unranked wrestler that defeats a “Pick 6” Contender assumes that wrestler’s spot, and everyone lower slides down one rank. The lower a wrestler is ranked, the more they have to lose.
– After every Ring of Honor event, the standings will be updated and posted at the ROHWrestling.com Message Forum.

As was reported by Brad Curran on Monday, Erick Stevens was unveiled in this past weekend’s shows as The Embassy’s new “monster.” As a result, three matches have been signed. On November 13th in Detroit, Stevens and Joey Ryan will take on the Super Smash Brothers. The next night, in Mississauga, Ontario, it will be Stevens & Ryan vs. the Briscoes. And finally, on December 5th in Chicago, Stevens will battle Necro Butcher.

Another match has been signed for Chicago as a result of the events that transpired during the match between Tyler Black and Kenny King (interference from Rhett Titus and Austin Aries turned the match into a six-man affair, with Colt Cabana and Grizzly Redwood teaming up with Black). Tyler Black will get his rematch against Kenny King, with Pick 6 spots at stake everyone else barred from ringside.

Also, Jim Cornette has signed a World Title match for Colt Cabana, as a result of Cabana forcing Aries to tap out in the Edison six-man. Cabana has requested that the title match take place in the Chicago show. More on this as it develops.

Due to a scheduling issue, the Ring of Honor event originally scheduled for February 12th in Boston, MA has been moved to April 9th. All tickets originally purchased for the February date will be honored in April.

ROH has issued a scheduling update for the shows taking place in Phoenix on Wrestlemania weekend (March 26-28, 2010). With the WWE Hall of Fame ceremony taking place at 4 PM on Saturday, the ROH event on that day has been moved up to a 1:00 PM start. Phoenix College is only 7 minutes away from the Dodge Theatre so the ROH show will end in enough time for those attending both events. Tickets for the first two rows have already sold out for Friday, and only a few second row tickets remain for Saturday. Purchase your tickets on ROH’s website by Thursday morning and receive 40 percent off.

ROH officials and representatives from Highspots, Pro Wrestling Guerrila, and others have been in discussions over the potential talent rosters for the big ROH January 29th Los Angeles debut, at WrestleReunion. Talent announcements are forthcoming, but Jushin “Thunder” Liger has been confirmed. Check out WrestleReunion’s website for more information.

The Detroit Examiner ran an interview with Roderick Strong on Monday, in anticipation of ROH’s return to Detroit this coming Friday. Click here for the interview.
