Reviews, Shows, TV Shows

Unfortunately, Survivor Series is done with for another year, so we’re back to regular matches on Vintage. And this week we’re going back to the best wrestlers of the 80’s.

The first match comes from June 21st, 1986. And is between Tony Garea and King Kong Bundy with Jimmy Hart. Starting off with Bundy in a side headlock before he knocks Garea down a couple of times as he tries to smash into Bundy. Garea manages to hit Bundy with some punches, but Bundy fights back. Bundy misses an elbow drop and Garea starts to work on his leg while he is down. Bundy grabs the ropes, and the hold on his leg is broken. They get back into it and Bundy is able to ram Garea into a turnbuckle head first before he stands on Garea’s head. He then chokes him out on the ropes and delivers a chop then into a snapmare and a two count. Bundy locks in a reverse chinlock. He whips Garea into the ropes and a dropkick takes Garea into control here. A reversal and an avalanche in the corner equal a three count and the win for King Kong Bundy.

The next match is for the Intercontinental Championship and is between Tito Santana and Paul Orndorff on September 1st, 1984. We come with with Orndorff in an arm bar which he is able to get out of as he proceeds to dropping Santana in a reverse atomic kneedrop. He then uses the ropes to press his knee down onto Santana’s neck. Orndorff showboats and then sends Santana to the outside before showboating again. Orndorff drops to the outside too and delivers another reverse atomic knee drop on the outside. Santana gets up onto the apron, but is stopped when Orndorff pulls him down neck first onto the top rope. Santana fall to the outside again, and Orndorff showboats. Santana gets back onto the apron and goes for a quick rollup while Orndorff is distracted. This doesn’t work and Santana is left on the mat again. Orndorff takes his time wandering around the ring, and Santana tries to come back to no avail. Orndorff locks in a facelock and we go to an ad break.

Santana manages to get back to his feet and is able to knock Orndorff down. Orndorff gets up quickly and hits a suplex to a two count. They get back up, Santana is thrown onto the ropes and manages a cross body as a reversal to a two count. Orndorff hits a couple of punches to a two count that throws him to the outside. Santana tries to come back, misses an elbow leaving Orndorff the chance to go up to the second rope. He tries to fly off, and Santana lifts his knees. Santana takes over, leading to a scoopslam, a slingshot and a two count. Santana runs the ropes, and Orndorff reverses with a clothesline into another two count. Orndorff knocks Santana down with knees and the bell rings before the ref can count three. It is announced that the match is a draw as the time limit has been reached. Still the champ, Tito Santana.

The next match is between Rowdy Roddy Piper & Bob Orton vs. Jimmy Snuka & Junkyard Dog. With Texas Tornado rules, meaning all four men are in the ring at once. January 21st, 1985. Junkyard Dog and Orton start off together, with Piper and Snuka in the other corner. Orton accidentally backdrops Piper, and Snuka and Junkyard Dog deliver headbutts to each man. Snuka is able to send Orton out of the ring headfirst, and then Piper and Snuka also head outside. Inside the ring, Junkyard Dog delivers a clothesline to a two count. Outside, Piper rams Snuka into the ring post. Back inside the ring, Orton and Piper double team on Junkyard Dog to a two count. All four men are inside till Junkyard Dog is sent to the outside. It looks like Piper & Orton will double team on Snuka, but he smashes their heads together. All four end up outside again, as Orton tries to head to the locker room. Back inside the ring, Orton & Piper take over ending in chinlocks on both their opponents. Both men fight out of the holds, and end up straight back in sleeper holds. And we go to an ad break.

Orton has Snuka and Piper has Junkyard Dog in sleeper holds. Both men are able to hold their hands up in response to the ref. It takes a while, but Junkyard Dog & Snuka are able to grab onto each other and break the holds by sending Orton & Piper into each other. They switch around and Piper stars working on Junkyard Dog, and Orton is on Snuka. They double team to double slam Snuka. Orton goes up to the top rope and tries to deliver a splash, but Snuka puts his knees up. Piper tries to work on Snuka, but a headbutt sends him to the outside with Snuka following. Junkyard Dog crotches Orton, and on the outside, Piper runs Snuka into the railings. inside the ring, Orton is able to pin the Junkyard Dog to get the win.

The main event this week is between Don Muraco and Pedro Morales and it’s for the Intercontinental Championship. Morales is the champion and is from January 22nd, 1983. The match begins with Muraco going straight for Morales with punches. Morales is able to gain early control using the title belt as a weapon. Morales uses the ripped t-shirt of Muraco to throw him into the corner of the ring. The ref holds Morales back from the corner, but he gets through soon enough. A reversal sends Morales into the turnbuckles, but a quick sunset flip reversal leads to a two count for Morales. Muraco is sent to the outside here while Morales stays in the ring listening to the count. Muraco gets up onto the apron and Morales pushes his head into the turnbuckle which sends him off the apron again. Morales goes up high, but Muraco rolls enough under the ring to hide himself. Muraco gets back into the ring and Morales stays in control. A low blow from Muraco leads to both men lying on the mat as we go to a break.

Both men are getting to their feet and Muraco tries to use the last piece of the shredded t-shirt to gain control of Morales. A low blow from Morales breaks it up. Muraco is thrown into the turnbuckle, and when Morales tries to follow it up by flying knee first into him. Muraco moves and Morales smashes his knee into the top turnbuckle. Muraco starts to work on Morales’s knee, hyperextending it. Both men make it to standing again, and Muraco continues to attack Morales’s knee. He gets into a figure four leglock, but Morales is able to get it broken by getting to the ropes. Morales rakes Muraco’s eyes, and when Muraco tries to go for another leg lock, Morales uses his good leg to send him shoulder first into the turnbuckle. When both men get to standing again, Morales is able to hit a backbreaker, and locks in a boston crab but he can’t hold it. Morales sends Muraco into the ropes, and tries to lift him for a scoopslam, but he falls back and Muraco is able to get the three count. The new Intercontinental Champion, Don Muraco.

That’s all she wrote for this week, we’ll be back next week with more Vintage action.
