First Trailer for Kevin Smith's Cop Out

News, Top Story, Trailers

Cop Out was originally titled A Couple of Dicks, but it was problematic for Warner Bros. The studio had to change it because of the top three networks (ABC, NBC, and CBS) said they couldn’t run the spots before 9 o’clock in the evening. Kevin Smith in a interview with Entertainment Weekly said that knowing the trailer was going to be attached to prints of Sherlock Holmes he didn’t want it to be called A Couple of Cops. So that’s why we have Cop Out. Considering the WB suits didn’t promise Smith the title originally, I guess they aren’t guilty of “copping out.”

The trailer has a great hook in letting the viewer remember some of the top crime movies that Warner Bros. has done. And from there, it segues into a buddy comedy with Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan as a pair of NYC cops who get mixed up in such shenanigans as locating a stolen baseball card, rescuing a woman, and dealing with gangsters and their laundered money. The trailer is okay, though Kevin Smith’s name is nowhere to be found – again another smart move by Warner Bros. Cop Out is the first movie he’s done where he’s working from a script that he hasn’t written himself. The screenplay is credited to Robb and Mark Cullen who are making the transition to features after TV shows like Las Vegas and Lucky. The buddy comedy is scheduled to be released on February 26, 2010. Yippie-Kay-Yay and snooch to the nooch.
