Yahoo UK has debuted the first trailer for the Sony Pictures release of Cemetery Junction, which is co-written and co-directed by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant (who recently had a supporting role in The Tooth Fairy). Together they created the hit HBO series Extras. Judging from the trailer, Gervais won’t the best center of the attention, regulating himself to a supporting role. Also making an appearance is Ralph Fiennes, who some may remember did a funny teaser for Junction last year.
Coming-of-age films are a dime a dozen, especially if it’s a comedy. And Cemetery Junction is just that. It’s a film about three friends in working-class England, circa 1970, who spend their days joking, drinking and chasing tail. Freddie (Christian Cooke) wants to leave their blue-collar world but cool, charismatic Bruce (Tom Hughes) and lovable loser Snork (Jack Doolan) are happy with life the way it is. As the first Gervais-Merchant film collaboration, this trailer does show some promise. Though I could have been sucked into it by the awesome music selections. Currently it’s without a release date, but Sony Pictures will release it sometime in 2010.
