Jones And Smith to Return For MIB 3D

Casting News, News

It’s the ’90s all over again.

Weeks after rumors began circulating that Will Smith would return for two sequels to Independence Day (rumors that were quickly shot down), Showbiz 411 is reporting that Barry Sonnenfeld has confirmed a second sequel to his popular science fiction comedy Men in Black. Smith would reprise his role as a sunglasses-sporting alien immigration officer along with co-star Tommy Lee Jones.

As is expected with all new films being greenlit, Men in Black 3 would be in 3D.

Rumors about a third film in the Men in Black series have been circulating for a while.

Etan Cohen, the writer of Tropic Thunder, was brought on board to write a new draft of the screenplay. Josh Brolin has been linked to a role in the film as a possible replacement partner for Smith if Jones decided not to return. Sasha Baron Cohen and Jemaine Clement were also names mentioned as possible additions to the film.

The Buzz: I still have fond memories of the original Men In Black. Besides Smith and Jones’s chemistry, the film featured a truly great performance by Vincent D’onofrio as an intergalactic cockroach wearing an ‘Edgar suit.’

While Men in Black 2 suffered a bit in the overall execution, I think there is still humor to be mined from the series. And Sonnefeld’s television work on Pushing Daises showed he still has the goods when it comes to a clever visual style. As long as they scale back the cute talking Pugs and concentrate on building a credible intergalactic threat, I think Men in Black 3D could be something worth getting excited about.

Sound off: What do you think of the idea of a Men in Black 3D? Are you excited to see Smith and Jones strap on the Ray-Bans or would you rather leave the series in the recesses of your memory? Are you excited as me about the possibility of a new  music video half as cool as this:
