Disc News: Rambo Extended Cut on the Way

Disc Announcements, News

War is hell, and in the case of Rambo it’s pretty damn bloody. Full of combat carnage that rivals any horror movie, Sylvester Stallone’s 2008 release Rambo put a capper on the John Rambo character. Arriving on July 27, this new “extended cut” from Lionsgate will be a complete recut of Stallone’s film. Cliff Stephenson, who has produced extras for the two Crank flicks, Gamer Hard Candy, and the Rambo series has been posting on the DVDTalk forums letting fans know what they can expect.

About the recut: “…the movie no longer begins with the “contest” the soldiers force upon the Karen villagers. There are lots of little tweaks, restructuring and changes throughout (including the removal or shortening of some of the more questionable FX shots). I happen to think it’s a far superior version of the movie when directly compared to the theatrical cut.”
Any extras carrying over? “The new director’s/extended cut does not contain the features I produced for the original 2008 release, but that was a very deliberate choice…We didn’t just want to recycle what people had already seen and owned. We wanted to create new material that would be fresh and more in concert with the director’s cut purpose of the new disc. I wanted to create a great 2-disc set, it just so happens that both discs are available separately. So you have a theatrical disc with all the extras geared towards the collaborative movie making process (including interviews with cast and crew) and an extended cut disc with a brand new 80+ minute production diary from Sylvester Stallone.”

The Blu-ray is expected to have 1080p video, a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 soundtrack, and along with the new footage the release will include nearly 90 minutes of newly created bonus material including Rambo: To Hell and Back – Sylvester Stallone’s video production diary.

Suggested list price for the Blu-ray is $19.99.

Also arriving on July 27, is Rambo: The Complete Collection on Blu-ray. Suggested list price is $54.99.
