Ok so this may be a bit late due to a last minute root canal I had to have done but you guys don’t care about my problems so on with the column! So this week I posed the question to all our forum goers as what they thought was their favorite Event or Crossover. The whole thread can be found here.
There was some awesome contributions by all of the regulars; the one that seemed to pop up alot was The Infifnity Gauntlet. Here are some excerpts for the Infinity Gauntlet love:
From Koh: “On the Marvel side, my favorite event probably is Thanos Quest / Infinity Gauntlet. Especially Thanos Quest, which is a little gem of a book: awesome story, excellent art, Thanos as the ultimate schemer/mischiever. Infinity Gauntlet, of course, has the aforementioned Thanos kill half the universe, then deal with a suicide team of every other Marvel character. He loses only because, deep inside, he knows he’s not worthy of such power. In the end, he retires to a country planet. Awesome.”
…and from Beadle: “One of the best things about the Infinity Gauntlet was the use of Mephisto. This is how he should be used (well, this and RAS’s Nightcrawler series, which now sadly can’t be followed up on). Devious, power-hungry and evil.”
Lastly from Dhaise…and if you know how this guy usually critiques comics, then this is by far one of the most glowing reviews he has ever given (other than when talking about WildCats 3.0): “Infinity Gauntlet was so good, I don’t even consider it an ‘event’.”
Now of course there were a ton of others mentioned but if I posted them all here then you wouldn’t go and read the whole thread no would you? As for me I was never a huge Event/Crossover guy until recently. I have to admit though that reading all the comments regarding the Infinity Gauntlet did make me remember the awesomeness of that story when I was picking it up when it came out. I will mention that when I 1st started getting back into comics after being a kid, I did fall in love with Batman: No Man’s Land. I had never been a huge DC guy when I was a kid and one of the worker’s at my LCBS suggested I give it a try. So I got the 1st couple of trades and then just had to get all the trades leading up to it and then the trades that happened afterwards. That may have been what started my love of Batman and the supporting characters and villians. Of course, I could go on about how cool Unity was from Valiant but you got enough Valiant love from me in the last column.
Now of course I couldn’t get through this column without mentioning the Avengers tournament. The 1st half of the semi finals has finished and alas in a last minute battle between Squirrel Girl and Moonstone my team was voted off. Such is life for my Woodland Avengers. I would like to give a shout out to Babos who had a pretty sweet come from behind victory in his bracket. Well I think that wraps it up for me this week. I would love suggestions for future topics I can start on the forums and I hope to see you all there.
