MLB News: Detroit TIgers Pitcher Armando Galarraga Throws Perfectish Game

News

In my book, it was a perfect game, and I’m a Twins fan.

After retiring the first 26 hitters of the ball game, Galarraga got Jason Donald to hit a chopper to first, Cabrera fielded it cleanly, tossed it to Galarraga covering the bag and everyone began to celebrate until they realized the first base umpire had called Donald safe.

Replays clearly show that Galarraga was there in plenty of time and it was clearly an out. Watching it in real time as the umps have to do, it was very close, but still should have been called an out in that situation.

All the credit in the world to Galarraga who handled the situation perfectly. While the rest of the stadium was booing and arguing with the umpire, Galarraga went back to work and retired the next hitter without ever confonting the umpire. All Galarraga did was give a smile of disbelief when the safe call was made, knowing that it was the wrong call. Had I been in Galarraga’s shoe’s, there might have been an unconcious umpire.
