Academy Awards Face Potential Date Shift

News, Rumors

The possibility of moving up the 2011 Academy Awards ceremony to sometime in January was discussed at Tuesday night’s Board of Governors meeting of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences, reports Deadline. The ceremony has of late typically taken place between the last weekend of February and the last week of March.

This move could, depending on how early in January we are talking about, position the Oscars before other notable award ceremonies including the SAG and the BAFTA awards — even potentially beating the Golden Globes (an award ceremony I personally have little to no respect for).

While this news is very early and should not be taken as a definite course of action, it does open the floor to some interesting speculation.

Moving the Oscars ahead of the other award ceremonies could bring back some of the excitement that was notably missing this year when actors began picking up multiple awards on the road to the Academy Awards — making it seem as if their eventual Oscar was all but a shoe-in.

The shortened award season would also cut down drastically on the campaigning — and, in the process, money for trade magazines who depend on “For Your Consideration” ad revenue.

It will be interesting to see how this news plays out and if this is something that the Board of Governors are even seriously considering or if it was just idle theorizing.

What do you think of the possibility of the Oscars moving up a month? What ways could this change the way award season is handled?
