Jon and Al Kaplan are geniuses. This is plain and simple truth.
After rising to fame in 2003 with their brutally funny Silence: The Musical, an adaptation of The Silence of the Lambs set to show tunes, the brothers have had a successful career providing music to a variety of film and television projects. On the side, though, the two have continued to work on their own projects — including a musical adaption of the second season of 24.
In the last few months, though, the Kaplans have been gifting humanity with a taste of what could be their latest long-form project — a musical journey through the filmography of Arnold Schwarzenegger.
It began about a month ago with the posting of Total Recall: The Musical — a melodic ballad sung from the perspective of Douglas Quaid.
What could have been a nice stand-alone treat celebrating the 20th anniversary of Paul Verhooven’s film turned out to be just the first in what is hopefully a long series of Schwarzenneger film-inspired musicals. Conan: The Musical is the latest baby to be born out of the Kaplan brother’s collective creative juices.
I can’t wait to see what comes next from these two very talented musicians. For more of their music (including songs from Seven: The Musical and RoboCop: The Musical) check out their website at www.jonandal.com.
