Disc News: MacGruber To Explode On Blu-Ray This September

Disc Announcements, News

MacGruber, the latest Saturday Night Live-inspired film to fail at the box office, will be released on Blu-ray and DVD on September 7 from Universal Studios. In the certifiable box-office bomb, Will Forte starred as a dim-witted crime fighter who attempted to put the kibosh on the villainous Dieter Von Cunth (played by Val Kilmer). Ryan Phillippe and Kristen Wiig co-starred in the film as MacGruber’s side-kicks.

While the film failed to find its audience in theaters, I have little doubt that the movie will become a certifiable cult favorite in the years to come. MacGruber is a movie that tends to grow on you — especially when seen in a full room with other ready-to-laugh audience members (something most theatergoers did not have the luxury of when they went to see the film in its sparsely attended opening weekend).

While some audiences may been left underwhelmed by the movie due to the extremely positive buzz that came wafting in after the film’s premiere at the South by Southwest Film Festival, checked expectations for a film humbled at the box office will go a long way towards an extended shelf life for MacGruber.

Expect MacGruber to become a perennial favorite on college campuses and the film’s quotes to slowly seep into the fringes of popular culture in much the same way quotes from film such as Idiocracy and Mallrats have.

Specs and special features for the discs have not yet been revealed but it is believed that both the theatrical and unrated cut will be available on the film’s Blu-ray.
