We already know that Pretty Little Liars is saving us from a summer of TV boredom. But it’s also saving indie bands from poverty!
PLL and other hip TV shows provide a huge boost in sales to musicians whose songs they feature on the show — like, often 1000% huge.
That boost is good for Pretty Little Liars, too — it means artists eager for their magic touch will let them use their songs on the cheap. “Everything is $1,000 — $1,000 is the new free,” says PLL showrunner I. Marlene King. “It gets us an amazing song that only costs us $1,000 to use over the course of seven years.”
And though PLL is relatively new, its tastemaker status is already well established. “When people watch our show, they’re dying to know on Twitter what was the band when Aria and Ezra get together,” says King. “It’s not just music, but clothes and set design — people are so fascinated — it helps us break new artists and introduce new artists.”
Wait, we’re being marketed to? We feel so used! But since our iPods are packed with tons of cool tunes from PLL, starting with the Pierces’ theme song, we’ll let it slide. Keep the great songs coming, and we’ll keep buying!
