New Thor Photo Promises Pointy Loki Hat, Plenty of Cheese

The Los Angeles Times‘ Calendar section has premiered the latest image from Kenneth Branagh’s upcoming Thor. The picture features our first (if tiny) look at a handful of characters in the film including Frigga (Rene Russo), Hogun (Tadanobu Asano) and Fandral (Josh Dallas). Besides Thor (Chris Hemsworth in the middle), you can also spot Odin (Anthony Hopkins) and Loki (Tom Hiddleston). More importantly, you can spot Loki’s trademark pointy helmet — the kind of headgear you’d never expect to see in a large budget summer tentpole movie. Click the picture for some higher resolution goodness.

The Buzz: A lot has been said about Thor‘s somewhat ridiculous costuming gear — especially in comparison to the duds from the upcoming Green Lantern film. While Green Lantern updated the hero’s costume for the big screen — making a few cosmetic tweaks to the design — the producers of Thor have seen fit to essentially take what was on the page and make it real. This should be like mana from the sky to those comic book geeks who have been complaining for the last ten years that Wolverine didn’t wear yellow in the X-Men movies. Instead, though, Thor‘s costumes have met with derision, jokes and more than a few comparisons to Flash Gordon.

I think that the suits work, though — especially considering their purpose. They are no more ridiculous than the armor the gods of Clash of the Titans wore and should prove ample contrast to the real world setting much of the movie will take place in.

I’m willing to hold off final judgment on the film’s design until I see the costumes in action — either in a trailer or the leaked Comic-Con footage I’m sure is right around the corner. What do you think, though? Is the golden gaudiness of Thor‘s costume too much for you to take? Or is it just the right amount of fabulous?
