2010 NFC East Rookie Preview

This isn’t a team preview series, but it’s a way to show how each team’s draft could affect the 2010 season for them. Starting in August, Inside Pulse Sports will start its NFL Preview.

Signings are as of Wednesday, July 28, 2010 at 1 PM CST.

NFC EAST

Dallas Cowboys
May Draft Grade: A-

Signed

#24 Dez Bryant – Will compete against Roy Williams for the number 2 WR spot across from last year’s surprise Miles Austin. He’ll get looks at kick returner and will be the punt returner in 2010. We’ll have to wait until the season to see if he should carry Roy Williams’ pads, or if it should’ve been the other way around.

#55 Sean Lee LB, Penn State – Sean Lee will still be wearing a brace on his surgically repaired knee that he wore all season long at Penn State in 2009, but Lee has said that he could start playing without it soon. The Cowboys just want to be safe. He’ll be competing with 2nd year linebacker Jason Williams for the nickel linebacker. In May he worked with the first team defense and will see more of that if Keith Brooking isn’t coming back from knee surgery quick enough. Has impressed in camp so far.

#126 Akwasi Owusu-Ansah CB/FS, Indiana of Pennsylvania – He may have to start training camp on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list because he’s still recovering from shoulder surgery. As a result, he’s missed OTAs and minicamp, so he’ll have to wait to have a shot at competing for starting free safety.

#179 Sam Young OT, Notre Dame – Will be there for offensive tackle depth.

#196 Jamar Wall CB, Texas Tech – will compete against Cletis Gordon, Marquis Floyd, and Bryan McCann for the number four corner in the Cowboys’ secondary.

#234 Sean Lissemore DE, William and Mary – providing depth.

Supplemental Draft Joshua Price-Brent NT, Illinois – depth, Jay Ratliff is at least the second best NT in the game.

Notable undrafted free agents:
Barry Church SS, Toledo
Lonyae Miller RB, Fresno State
Matt Nichols QB, Eastern Washington (Todd McShay’s baby)
Scott Sicko TE, New Hampshire

New York Giants
May Draft Grade: B-

Signed

#76 Chad Jones S, LSU – suffered a fractured leg and had arteries and nerves exposed in a car accident on June 25. He’s undergone a number of surgeries since (orthopedic, neurological and vascular procedures) in order to recover. Jones was signed before the accident. I wouldn’t expect him to play this year. He was recently released from the hospital.

#115 Phillip Dillard LB, Nebraska – will be in competition with Jonathan Goff and Keith Bullock for starting middle linebacker.

#145 Mitch Petrus G, Arkansas – Could play some this year because the Giants’ running game last year just wasn’t like it used to be. Injecting some youth could help improve it.

#184 Adrian Tracy DE, William and Mary – Depth.

#221 Matt Dodge P, East Carolina – Looks like the Giants will go with the rookie and not even bring in any competition to push him.

Unsigned

#15 Jason Pierre-Paul DE, USF – Tremendously athletic, he will get playing time this year. He’ll still be behind Osi Umenyiora on the depth chart though.

#46 Linval Joseph DT, East Carolina – Barry Cofield was almost traded on draft day, so a DT position that was already needing an upgrade will have Joseph waiting for Cofield to become expendable.

Notable undrafted free agents:
Dennis Landolt OT, Penn State

Philadelphia Eagles
May Draft Grade: B

Signed

#37 Nate Allen S, USF – Defensive Coordinator had said back in June that Allen was considered the starting free safety, so it’s his position to lose.

#86 Daniel Te’o-Nesheim DE, Washington – will come in on passing downs to replace a defensive tackle, otherwise will have to fight for playing time at defensive end.

#105 Trevard Lindley CB, Kentucky – won’t be in contention for a starters spot, nickel and dime situations.

#121 Keenan Clayton OLB, Oklahoma – depth

#122 Mike Kafka QB, Northwestern – Developmental prospect for the Eagles. Very smart player and impressed Marty Mornhinweg in offseason workouts with his accuracy.

#125 Clay Harbor TE, Missouri State – Brent Celek has stranglehold on TE spot, but could see some time with his athleticism.

#134 Ricky Sapp DE, Clemson – Pass rushing prospect. He’s a bit undersized, but has been working at DE so far in training camp, but has practiced at both DE and LB while with the Eagles.

#159 Riley Cooper WR, Florida – Florida WRs usually crap out in the NFL, but Harvin and Louis Murphy fared well last season, so Cooper could continue that. However, there are too many weapons on this offense already for him to make a big impact immediately.

#200 Charles Scott RB, LSU – behind Mike Bell and LeSean McCoy.

#220 Jamar Chaney LB, Mississippi State – will provide linebacker depth.

#243 Jeff Owens DT, Georgia – Mike Patterson and Brodrick Bunkley are entrenched as the starters, so Owens will provide depth.

#244 Kurt Coleman S, Ohio State – depth.

Unsigned

#13 Brandon Graham DE, Michigan – One of many first round picks who will/have missed first day(s) of training camp. Will put him at a disadvantage early in the season, but will still get decent playing time this year. Andy Reid has envisioned him as left defensive end in pass rushing situations.

Notable undrafted free agents:
Simoni Lawrence LB, Minnesota
David Pender CB, Purdue
Boo Robinson DT, Wake Forest

Washington Redskins
May Draft Grade: C

Signed

#103 Perry Riley LB, LSU – expected to provide inside linebacker depth in the new 3-4 for the Redskins.

#174 Dennis Morris FB, Louisiana Tech – will move to fullback in the NFL and learn from vet Mike Sellers.

#219 Terrence Austin WR, UCLA – will compete, but kick returning will be key to him getting time, maybe even a spot on the team.

#229 Erik Cook C, New Mexico – will compete for depth.

#231 Selvish Capers OL, West Virginia – ditto with Cook.

Unsigned

#4 Trent Williams OT, Oklahoma – Will start at left tackle this year in the wake of Chris Samuels retiring. Jamaal Brown will play right tackle. Should be at left tackle for years to come for the Skins.

Notable undrafted free agents:
Brandon Banks WR, Kansas State
Shay Hodge WR, Mississippi
Keiland Williams RB, LSU
