At the Mountains of Madness Will Be Next For del Toro

News, Projects

Deadline is reporting that Universal has given the go-ahead for Guillermo del Toro’s long-in-development adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s At the Mountains of Madness. The film will be produced by James Cameron and will be shot in 3D. Lovecraft’s original book dealt with a geologist on an Antarctic expedition who finds the remains of ancient uncharted life forms — and the horror that is Cthulhu.

Del Toro has long been fascinated with H.P. Lovecraft’s seminal story — actively pursing a big screen adaptation of the novella for 13 years. One might even suspect that part of what attracted del Toro to direct the original Hellboy was the Lovecraftian overtones to the story.

The Buzz: I’m really interested to see what kind of budget Universal is going to provide del Toro for At the Mountains of Madness. If done correctly, this film has the potential to be a huge present to horror geeks everywhere — large in scale, bleak in tone and — with del Toro at the helm — visually stunning to boot.

Out of all the projects on del Toro’s slate, this was the one I was rooting would get made (well, besides Hellboy 3). The news that the director will finally begin production and will be bringing James Cameron and his 3D technology along makes me all kinds of excited. This is a movie to get excited about. Officially.
