James Cameron To Bring True Lies to Television

News, Projects

Deadline is reporting James Cameron, who previously created the very fun early ’00s Jessica Alba-starring television series Dark Angel, is set to bring his hit film True Lies to the small screen.

Cameron, riding high off of his success with Avatar, will team with showrunner Rene Echevarria to adapt the 1994 Arnold Schwarzenegger film about a family man who doubles as a government spy for television. Cameron’s Lightstorm Entertainment will produce for 20th Century Fox TV.

True Lies itself is based on the 1991 French film La totale!, and has been the subject of sequel rumors since it first lit up the box office in 1994. Its stars, including Schwarzenegger, Jaime Lee Curtis, Tom Arnold and Eliza Dushku, have dropped hints about Cameron’s interest in a sequel over the years.

Rene Echevarria has previously co-created/executive produced The 4400 for USA Network and more recently served as a co-showrunner on ABC’s Castle. There is no word if Cameron, who is currently deciding between directing an Avatar sequel, Battle Angel or The Dive, would step behind the camera for the television show’s pilot as he did for Dark Angel‘s series finale.

While its too early to tell who much this proposed True Lies show would differ from NBC’s upcoming J.J. Abrams’ produced spy couple TV show Undercovers, a Cameron-produced reboot or follow-up to one of his most popular movies should make for an entertaining TV show.

This is completely speculation but it’s worth noting that original film star Eliza Dushku has a development deal at Fox. Could we possibly see her return to the series as the now-grown spy daughter of Schwarzenegger and Curtis?

What would you rather see in a True Lies TV show? A complete reboot or some kind of sequel staring Dushku?
