It’s always interesting to see which new shows networks think are the best. By putting those shows right after their highest rated shows, they basically tell everyone they think they have the best chance to impress. Mike & Molly gets the perfect spot on CBS’ Monday night comedy lineup, right behind the highly rated Two and a Half Men.
Here is the synopsis of Mike & Molly straight from CBS:
“Mike & Molly is about a working class Chicago couple who find love at an Overeaters Anonymous meeting. Officer Mike Biggs (Billy Gardell) is a good-hearted cop who sincerely wants to lose weight. Mike’s partner, Officer Carl McMillan (Reno Wilson), is a thin, fast-talking wise-guy, who despite his teasing encourages Mike on his road to slimness and romance. While speaking at an O.A. meeting, Mike meets Molly Flynn (Melissa McCarthy), an instantly likeable fourth-grade teacher with a healthy sense of humor about her curves. For Molly, focusing on smart choices isn’t easy because she lives with her sexy older sister, Victoria (Katy Mixon), and their mother, Joyce (Swoosie Kurtz), both of whom flaunt their healthy appetites and slender figures. Mike also faces temptation at the diner he and Carl frequent, where they’ve become friends with the Senegalese waiter, Samuel (Nyambi Nyambi), who finds trying to eat less a foreign concept. For Mike and Molly, thanks to their mutual love of pie and the desire to resist it, finding each other may have been worth the ‘weight’.”
My First 10 Thoughts on the “Pilot” Episode of Mike & Molly:
1. Fans of Gilmore Girls will be excited to see Melissa McCarthy again on television.
2. Billy Gardell, who plays Mike, has great chemistry with Melissa, who plays Molly of course.
3. Too many “fat” jokes.
4. Nyambi Nyambi is pretty funny as Samuel, who is Mike’s best friend.
5. Katy Mixon, who plays Molly’s sister, is also great in her role.
6. I get that the show is about this couple being overweight, but still way too many jokes about their weight.
7. Mike & Molly are a believable couple.
8. Probably will fall into a predictable pattern of them dating, breaking up a few times, and then maybe even get married, though.
9. Will be given enough time to develop into something more than being all about “fat” jokes based on when it airs on CBS.
10. Overall, the cast is great and it was mostly funny, but the best jokes had nothing to do with the weight of the main characters.
