2010 Fall TV Premiere Week: 10 Thoughts On…$#*! My Dad Says Review

10 Thoughts, Reviews, Shows

So in today’s world social networks like Facebook and Twitter are king. But who would have thought that a popular twitter feed would become the basis for an actual TV show. That is what CBS has decided to do with $#*! My Dad Says. Yes, that is curse word in the title.

Here is the synopsis of $#*! My Dad Says straight from CBS:

“$#*! MY DAD SAYS, based on the popular Twitter feed by Justin Halpern, stars Emmy Award winner William Shatner as Ed Goodson, a forthright and opinionated dad who relishes expressing his unsolicited and often wildly politically incorrect observations to anyone within earshot. Nobody is immune from Ed’s rants, including his sons, Henry, a struggling writer-turned-unpaid blogger; and Vince (Will Sasso), the meek half of his husband/wife real estate duo with domineering Kathleen (Nicole Sullivan). When Henry finds he can no longer afford to pay rent to his pretty roommate — and secret admirer — Sam (Stephanie Lemelin), Ed reveals a soft spot and invites Henry to move in with him. Henry agrees, knowing that the verbal assault will not abate and now there will be no escape. Describing their father/son relationship is tricky – but Ed will easily come up with a few choice words.”

My First 10 Thoughts on the “Pilot” Episode of $#*! My Dad Says:

1. William Shatner plays a great grumpy old man.

2. Jonathan Sadowski doesn’t appear to be a natural actor. There is no doubt that every word from his mouth is from a script.

3. None of the stuff that Ed Goodson says is as shocking as what the title would imply.

4. Basically, this is a TV version of Grumpy Old Men with just one old man.

5. This premise could easily wear thin over the course of the season.

6. Will Sasso and Nicole Sullivan are the funniest people in the first episode.

7. The line where William Shatner, still in character, says something like “why can’t anyone do a decent impression of me” was the best line of the entire episode.

8. The characters need to show more depth in future episodes, if they want people to stick around.

9. It has a great lead-in with The Big Bang Theory, since their fans appear to have found the new time slot.

10. If you are a William Shatner fan, you will probably enjoy this, but everyone else around him needs to get better if it was to develop a solid fanbase.

I'm not embarrassed to say that my favorite television show of all-time is The O.C. I live by the motto "you can't fight fate!" More importantly, I watch WAY too much television, but I do so for the benefit of everyone reading this now. So to my mom and my wife, I say thanks for reading! To everyone else that might stumble across this, remember TiVo should be your best friend!
