Christopher Plummer the Latest to Join Fincher’s Dragon Tattoo

Casting News, News

Shooting may have already commenced in Sweden for Sony Pictures’ American produced adaptation of Stieg Larrson’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, but casting is far from over. To be directed by David Fincher, the film includes among its cast Daniel Craig, Rooney Mara, Stellan Skarsgård, and Robin Wright. Heat Vision is reporting that Oscar nominated actor Christopher Plummer is the latest name to join the cast. His role is that of wealthy industrialist Henrik Vanger, who hires disgraced journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Daniel Craig) to solve a 40-year-old cold case involving his niece. Along the way, Blomkvist uncovers a web of familial corruption. Rooney Mara stars as the titular heroine, hacker/punk chic Lisbeth Salander, who gets involved in the mystery.

While Max Von Sydow would have seemed like a no-brainer to play Henrik, considering his Swedish heritage and all, Christopher Plummer isn’t a bad choice. Kids today might recognize him as the voice of Charles Muntz in Up (or 1 in 9). Frankly, I thought his portrayal of Mike Wallace The Insider was damn impressive, and his role of Reverend Jonathan Whirley in Dragnet is a guilty pleasure. The combined talents of director David Fincher and producer Scott Rudin, who already have a relationship with doing The Social Network, already showed that Sony Pictures was serious with the American adaptation. Screenwriter Steven Zaillian may not have the pedigree of an Aaron Sorkin (sorry All the King’s Men was just too bad), but he knows his way around adapting a best-selling work.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo opens in theaters on December 21, 2011.
