NHL News: Chicago Blackhawks Defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson Suspended Two Games

News

This could have easily been more.

The NHL announced that Blackhawks defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson would be suspended two game for his dangerous hit from behind on Buffalo Sabre’s forward Jason Pominville.

Hjalmarsson hit Pominville high and from behind sending him crashing into the boards with his head snapping into the glass. Pominville laid on the ice for several minutes before being taken off on a stretcher. Pominville suffered a concussion and a cut that required 7 stitches.

Sabre’s goalie Ryan Miller said it could have easily been worse, “I don’t even know if there was enough made of it, because Jason was walking out with just stitches,” Miller said after practice on Tuesday. “What if Jason has a fractured neck? We don’t even know if it’s going to have an impact with concussions.”

Hjalmarsson will miss the Blackhawks game on Wednesday against the Predators and Friday against the Blue Jackets. Hjalmarsson’s first game back will be Saturday against you know who…the Buffalo Sabres. I’m guessing Hjalmarsson will be forced to drop the gloves at least once.
