10 Thoughts on… South Park “Mysterion Rises” Who Is Mysterion? Episode 14-12

10 Thoughts, Top Story

South Park is back with part 2 of last week’s Coon & Friends episode which promises to reveal Mysterion’s identity.

With all the speculation about who is Mysterion, will we finally find out who it actually is?

1. Part 2 begins with a recap, then the Coon in an airport headed to Denver. When a little girl recognizes him, but then asks about Mint Berry Crunch, he freaks out and mauls her.

2. In the first few minutes of the episode, Captain Hindsight breaks into the Coon & Friends HQ and tears it up. It’s revealed(?) here that Mysterion is KENNY.

3. There is a cool comic-book art effect they are using to show some stories in the show, including a Mysterion comic and then later a Coon comic that portrays the Coon from the eyes of Cartman as he beat down the girl.

4. After Captain Hindsight breaks down about the difficulties of having 20/20 hindsight, Mysterion complains about not being able to die! Sometimes he sees a light, sometimes he sees Heaven or Hell, but always just ends up back in his clothes. The kids in school dont even acknowledge that he died “even when he was decapitated”.

5. Back from the first commercial, there is an AWESOME three-way parody of the new Lebron James ads asking “what should i do?” Cartman ended it by asking “should i go back to my old team”. Nah, f[bleep]uck that, I’m gonna continue being a dick.

6. Mosquito was revealed to be Clyde, doing a more nasal voice. That explains how he was beat up by the Coon too, as the regular boys would not have allowed that.

7. The Coon befriended the beast Cthulu and is shown relaxing and hanging out with the beast, kind of like King Kong. Later he announces a merger between Cthulu and Coon as the new Coon & Friends! There is a crazy comic-art montage with music of Cthulu and the Coon which was unbelieveable.

8. The Goth kids are back as part of a Cthulu cult – and Mysterion confronts them. The smallest kid whips out a knife and threatens to kill Mysterion! Later, they actually do!

9. Coon & Friends appears at Kenny’s bedroom door, and sure enough, he is back in his normal clothes in bed. Why did he run away!? Kenny sighs…

10. Looks like we are headed for a part 3. They are tricky to not announce these multiparts in advance because it definitely takes the steam out of part 2 a bit knowing it will go to part 3.

Quotes:
Mysterion/Kenny: I can’t die!

Coon/Cartman: “sending all my stupid friends to oblivion – suck it bitches!”

Overall:
Another funny episode with a lot of random references, but I am weary of a three part episode with many rehashed characters like the Coon, Mysterion, Goth kids, etc. There didn’t seem to be much advanced in the core story either besides the reveal of Mysterion. There were two hilarious scenes – the aforementioned Coon/Cthulu music montage, and a scene where Mysterion confronts Kenny’s parents, who call him “Mysterio”. Next week is part 3 (and final?) or else they are doing a four parter to end the season, which would be weak.
