Brothers & Sisters – Episode 5-6 Review

Reviews, Shows

After the disappointing episode “Call Mom,” Brothers & Sistersbounces back with the fantastic episode “An Ideal Husband.” Kevin and Scotty drama takes center stage for once as the family reacts to the shocking news of Scotty’s affair.

Of course, an episode of Brothers & Sisters can’t have an episode with just one focus. Back in the city for the first time in a while, Jack throws himself back into the business world, much to Kitty’s surprise. He’s looking into every deal he can get his hands on, including spending a year in Vietnam. Though Kitty is startled when he asks her and Evan to go with him, I’m shocked when she actually considers the offer. For sure, I thought she would immediately shoot him down, and that would be her story line for the episode.

But I’m pleasantly surprised when there’s the unexpected twist of Kitty breaking up with Jack because she realizes he’s impulsive to a fault. As it turns out, while Jack was considering Vietnam at the start of the day, by the end, he’s considering other business ventures. Kitty realizes she can’t handle it. They break up with the understanding that they were each other’s transitional relationships. A refreshing twist instead of the typical move of sending Jack away for business.

Meanwhile, Sarah has to decide if she will accept Luc’s marriage proposal. Her brother’s crumbling relationship makes her realize that no Walker marriage is a happy one, and so she’s afraid that she and Luc will suffer the same fate. Understandable given that no couple, except hopefully Kevin and Scotty, stays together forever on  Brothers & Sisters. Actually, I really like that this show acknowledges their never-ending relationship drama.

In the end, she accepts the proposal, so she and Luc are now engaged. I’m thrilled for them. It’ll be nice to have the story line of their engagement for the rest of the season. Hopefully. With this show, you never know how long any couple will last.

Throughout all this, Kevin starts sleeping in the restaurant’s office because he can’t stand the thought of sleeping in his bedroom, let alone with Scotty. The siblings and Nora are shocked when they find out what Scotty did, especially since he’s always seemed so perfect. Still, they encourage annoyed Kevin to forgive him. Heartbroken, Kevin is frustrated that no one understands he has a right to be angry with unfaithful Scotty. The only one to somewhat understand is Saul, who treats Scotty coldly on the night of Nora’s charity event at the restaurant.

Since the restaurant is understaffed for such a big event, Saul mistakenly hires the waiter…who Scotty had the affair with. The jerk brags to Justin about it, so he and Scotty try to quietly get him to leave before Kevin realizes and has to go through more pain. But Kevin finds out and attacks the waiter before he can leave.

Before the fight, though, a couple of flashbacks explain how the affair happened. Unstable after losing both Robert and the baby, Kevin spends the opening night of Scotty’s restaurant at a bar instead of supporting his husband. Scotty is so upset that when the waiter hits on him, he accepts the offer of grabbing some drinks after work, which led to more.

While the rest of the family keeps saying Kevin should forgive right away, I feel bad for the guy. He’s been through so much in the last year, and then he finds out his husband cheated on him. He does have a right to be angry for a long while. Not too long though. I do love Scotty, even after what he did, so I want to see these two work everything out.

Given how good this episode is, and how good the sneak peeks I’ve seen are, I’m hoping this is season five’s turn for the better. “Resolved” airs November 7th.
