Abner Mares and Joseph Agbeko Advance In Bantamweight Tournament

News

Abner Mares looked little like a winner after his bout with Vic Darchinyan earlier tonight in Tacoma, Washington. But Mares was indeed declared the winner by split decision. Scores were 115-111 for Mares, 115-111 for Darchinyan and 115-112 for Mares.

Mares was cut in the first after a headbutt that caused Mares to bleed throughout the fight. Mares was knocked down in the 2nd round and deducted a point in the 4th for a low blow. Vic Darchinyan looked good early but faded late, including getting knocked down in the 7th.

In the other semifinal bout, Joseph Agbeko avenged last year’s loss to Yonnhy Perez with a unanimous decision victory in the rematch. Scores were 117-111, 116-112, and 115-113.

Joseph Agbeko and Abner Mares will face-off in the bantamweight finals.
