Golden Globes Nominees and My Thoughts

News

It’s Award Show Season, yay!! I love awards shows. I love trying to predict winners and judging red carpet looks. I love making special snacks and dissecting all the hits and misses the next day. And now that the Golden Globe nominations are out, I have an idea of what movies I should try and see before it’s time for the Oscars!

Since I haven’t seen a lot of these movies, I’m not making any predictions. Hopefully I’ll do that later, closer to the actual awards show date. For now, I’ll just comment on a few of the nominations. Take a look and share your thoughts!

MOTION PICTURES

Best Picture — Drama
Black Swan
The Fighter
Inception
The King’s Speech
The Social Network

I’ve only seen Inception and The Social Network here, but I loved both flicks. I plan on seeing all these movies, though, so hopefully I’ll be able to choose a favorite when it’s time for the winner to be announced.

Best Picture — Musical or Comedy
Alice in Wonderland
Burlesque
The Kids Are All Right
Red
The Tourist

Are you kidding me? So much here surprises me. I should really go see The Tourist, because nothing about the trailers suggested to me that it was a comedy. And Burlesque? I thought that bombed? And was Alice in Wonderland really a comedy?

Good job, Emma Stone! I really liked Easy A. I’m surprised Anne Hathaway got a nod, I didn’t hear great things about Love and Other Drugs. Not about the acting in it, anyway.

Best Supporting Actor
Christian Bale, The FighterMichael Douglas, Wall Street: Money Never SleepsAndrew Garfield, The Social NetworkJeremy Renner, The TownGeoffrey Rush, The King’s Speech
No Justin Timberlake? This doesn’t bode well for the Oscars. I’m rooting for him because he has such a good shot at an EGOT, but I liked Andrew Garfield a lot too.

TELEVISION

Best TV Series — Drama
Boardwalk Empire
Dexter
The Good Wife
Mad Men
The Walking Dead

Anyone who tries to tell me that Boardwalk Empire – or anything else, for that matter – was better than this season of Mad Men clearly just didn’t see this season of Mad Men. And for that, they will be excommunicated. Everyone should be watching Mad Men.

Best TV Series — Musical or Comedy

30 Rock
The Big Bang Theory
The Big C
Glee
Modern Family
Nurse Jackie

I think Modern Family deserves the award, but there are a lot of great shows listed here.

Best Miniseries or Made-for-TV Movie
Carlos
The Pacific
The Pillars of the Earth
Temple Grandin
You Don’t Know Jack

Best Actor — Drama
Steve Buscemi, Boardwalk Empire
Bryan Cranston, Breaking Bad
Michael C. Hall, Dexter
Jon Hamm, Mad Men
Hugh Laurie, House M.D.
I would almost be happy with anyone winning this category. I gave up on watching House, but I’ll always think Hugh Laurie is fantastic. And Steve Buscemi is the only reason I kept watching Boardwalk Empire. But Don Draper went through such a fascinating season on Mad Men this season, and Jon Hamm played it perfectly. And Michael C. Hall is outstanding every single season. And I’ve heard such good things about Breaking Bad, it never comes as a surprise when he wins something. This is a tough category.

Best Actress — Drama
Elizabeth Moss, Mad Men
Julianna Margulies, The Good Wife
Piper Perabo, Covert Affairs
Katey Sagal, Sons of Anarchy
Kyra Sedgwick, The Closer
Oh come on, this was an awesome season for Peggy Olsen. I really want this to go to Elizabeth Moss.

Best Actor — Musical or Comedy
Alec Baldwin, 30 Rock
Steve Carell, The Office
Thomas Jane, Hung
Matthew Morrison, Glee
Jim Parsons, The Big Bang Thoery
This is another great category, since the only show I don’t watch on this list is Hung. Is this Steve Carell’s last year for The Office? I’m never clear on which season these awards are honoring.

Best Actress — Musical or Comedy
Toni Collette, United States of Tara
Edie Falco, Nurse Jackie
Tina Fey, 30 Rock
Laura Linney, The Big C
Lea Michele, Glee
This is another tough category. I like all these people, but I don’t feel really strongly that any one in particular should win.

Best Actor — Miniseries or Made-for-TV Movie
Idris Elba, Luther
Ian McShane, Pillars of the Earth
Al Pacino, You Don’t Know Jack
Dennis Quaid, The Special Relationship
Edgar Ramirez, Carlos

Best Actress — Miniseries or Made-for-TV Movie
Hayley Atwell, Pillars of the Earth
Claire Danes, Temple Grandin
Judi Dench, Return to Cranford
Romola Garai, Emma
Jennifer Love Hewitt, The Client List

Best Supporting Actor in TV Series, Mini-Series, or Made-for-TV Movie
Scott Caan, Hawaii Five-0
Chris Colfer, Glee
Chris Noth, The Good Wife
David Strathairn, Temple Grandin
Eric Stonestreet, Modern Family
Someone from Hawaii Five-O is nominated? Really? I could have replaced him with basically any male actor from Modern Family. I love Eric Stonestreet, but I just have to root for Chris Colfer. Kid is just too amazing.

Best Supporting Actress in TV Series, Mini-Series, or Made-for-TV Movie
Hope Davis, The Special Relationship
Jane Lynch, Glee
Kelly Macdonald, Boardwalk Empire
Julia Stiles, Dexter
Sofia Vergara, Modern Family
This is just too diverse a list. How am I supposed to compare the hilarity of Sofia Vergara or Jane Lynch to the anguish that Julia Stiles portrayed on Dexter? I wish they’d split these categories up.
