Kue’s Korner: From Blue to Teal; Smackdown’s Descent

Columns, Top Story

Greetings, friends and acquaintances. Welcome to Kue’s Korner where I, your host, the ever eclectic Jonah Kue, feed you my thoughts on the comings and goings (ah, let’s stop that, you naughty minds, you) in the world of amateur wrestling….just kidding, I like the fake stuff.

Let’s begin with a little self-promotion, You can follow me here…

I’m a bit disturbed, my fellow ringinites. No, not solely due to Ke$ha being named the numero uno song of the year (that warranted a good half hour weep for the future). And no, not even due to the several idiots on the R train that tend to play their MP3 players loud enough for the majority of two cars to hear (and some of these playlists just have no transitions. I mean, Air Supply and Eminem consecutively? Another half hour weep). But our dear boys of the blue brand are starting to become rather numb to the senses.

We’ve all known that Smackdown has been circling the drain for a good portion of this year. Thing is, I’m a bit perplexed at how the WWE is treating this fall. The past few Smackdowns have been littered with Raw superstars. I feel as though every time I tune in on Friday night (well, Saturday afternoons via lovely little Youtube), it’s treated as a promo for Monday nights. Now, that wouldn’t be too terrible if it didn’t feel so heavy handed. Don’t get me wrong, I thought the Miz was great the past two weeks, and I enjoyed his matches with both Rey and Orton. But the latter match just didn’t seem like it had a place on Smackdown. Also, as much as they’re now the unified Tag champs, it’s a crying shame that so much time is devoted to the originally Raw-based team of Kozlov/Marella (then again, it’s a shame they’re given that much time on either show). And where did we leave our special live edition of Blue and White this past Tuesday? A build up for the Punk/Cena showdown that’s going to be based on RAW. Seriously?

Look, I’ll concede that the only things memorable on Smackdown for the past few weeks have been the IC Title contenders, Rey/Del Rio, and (for the sole fact of this being shoved down our throats) Kane/Edge for the World Title. What about Dashing Cody? He’s had enough time to establish his character, and he’s pretty over as a heel. GIVE HIM A FEUD, ALREADY. Hopefully, they can pull off something clever with the Big Show so that Cody can find his momentum. And his knee pads. Kaval is rolling down a losing streak, but he’s gotten enough of a fan reaction to warrant a feud as well (perhaps with the newly-conceptualized Tyler Reks?)

See, I’m just as prone to marking out as anybody with the Miz becoming champ and bringing in a fresh era to Raw. But it’s a mistake for that to overshadow the talent swimming in the Blue brand. I hope that the upcoming Wrestlemania season to stimulate some fantastic growth in creative for both Smackdown and Raw.

Adieu.

I like my wrestling almost as much as I do my coffee. And I do love my coffee, as you can tell how much it's affected my skin tone.
