2010 Fight Of The Year

Features, Top Story

When it comes to End of the Year awards, Fight of the Year is perhaps the most anticipated and widely debated. There was no clear winner this year but one fight did emerge from the bunch. The nominees are:

Fight of the Year

Giovani Segura vs Ivan Calderon
Juan Manuel Lopez vs Rafael Marquez
Juan Manuel Marquez vs Michael Katsidis
Humberto Soto vs Urbano Antillon
Amir Khan vs Marcos Maidana

Segura managed to slow down the technically superior Calderon and stop the long reigning light flyweight champion. Lopez faced, and passed, the toughest test of his career in a slugfest with Rafael Marquez. While Rafael struggled with Lopez, his brother Juan Manuel Marquez rallied from an early scare against Michael Katsidis to score the 9th round stoppage. Humberto Soto had barely enough to outlast Antillon in December. Amir Khan looked good against Marcos Maidana until the 10th when he nearly lost the bout but he showed great heart in making it to the final bell.

And the winner is…

Juan Manuel Marquez vs Michael Katsidis

November and December salvaged and otherwise forgettable year of boxing. The cream of the crop, however, turned out to be the November 27 bout between Juan Manuel Marquez and Michael Katsidis. It was a fight that had lofty expectations going into round one…then managed to live up to them. Marquez went down early in the third round but survived and outlasted a game Katsidis. Marquez battered Katsidis around the ring in the 9th. After numerous unanswered blows, the ref finally stopped the contest awarding the victory to Juan Manuel Marquez.
