Lights Out, a new series that premeires tonight on FX at 10pm ET, chronicles the life of Patrick “Lights” Leary as he contemplates a return to the ring five years after losing his heavyweight championship.
Patrick “Lights” Leary is played by Holt McCallany. Leary is a likable father of three girls and McCallany plays the role with more depth than just “retired champ attempts a comeback.” Leary feels the need to provide for his family as his wife Theresa (Catherine McCormack) takes part in more philanthropic endeavors. But beyond his immediate family, Leary also looks out for his brother/manager Johnny (Pablo Schreiber), his father/trainer Robert (Stacy Keach), and his sister Margaret (Elizabeth Marvel).
Leary retired after losing a close decision for his world title so he could spend more time with his family. Now facing mounting financial problems, the soon to be 40-year-old considers a comeback five years later.
Lights Out gives a closer look into the personal life of a champion boxer. It also shows the very dirty side of the business. Leary wants to be a good guy and do things the right way, but it’s impossible to keep up doing everything by the rules. As Johnny points out to him, “Integrity? This is boxing.”
Lights Out is more than just a show about a retried boxer thinking of a comeback. It’s about what lengths a man will go to in order to protect and support the ones he loves.
Boxing can be a dirty business and Lights Out brings a lot of those shady dealings to light. The most basic rule of boxing is to protect yourself at all times. But Patrick “Lights” Leary may be biting off more than he can chew when he tries to protect himself, and the ones that he loves, at all times.
