Heavy Rain Film Taking Shape with David Milch On Board

News, Projects

Quantic Dreams’ Heavy Rain for the PlayStation 3 was very cinematic in its storytelling, so, of course, makes it prime material for a movie adaptation. Last May it was reported that the men behind Seven (Bob Shaye and Michael Lynne, former New Line Cinema honchos) were eyeing an adaptation for their new production studio Unique Features.

“Unique” is a fitting term to describe Heavy Rain, a video game that picked up many awards when it was released last year, including IGN’s Best PS3 Game of 2010, over the likes of Red Dead Redemption and God of War III.

Heavy Rain spans four days of mystery and centers on the hunt for a murderer known as the Origami Killer. Four characters, each following his own leads and with his own motives, take part in a desperate attempt to prevent the killer from claiming a new victim, with each character’s decisions affecting the plans of the other three.

David Milch, no stranger when it comes to complex characters and rich story-telling from his role as creator/exec producer of NYPD Blue and Deadwood, will join Bob Shaye and Michael Lynne in adapting the best-selling video game. “David Milch’s incredible ability to transform intense and complex storylines into gripping, popular drama makes him the perfect partner for us to have on Heavy Rain, ” Shaye said.

Once Milch finishes his first season of Luck for HBO he will get started writing Heavy Rain.

It will be interesting to see how the Quantic Dreams game translates on the big screen. The game itself was built around a 2,000-page script written by founder and CEO David Cage. As part of that epic-sized script, the game included a total of 22 different endings.

So it will be something of a mystery the conclusion Milch and Co. decide on for the feature film.
