In a formal press release, Warner Bros. has announced today that Henry Cavill has won the coveted role of Superman, the iconic superhero who is faster than a speeding bullet and more powerful than a locomotive last time I checked.
Zack Synder (Watchmen, 300) will direct the film and had this to say about the hiring of Henry Cavill. “In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time, and I am honored to be a part of his return to the big screen. I also join Warner Bros., Legendary and the producers in saying how excited we are about the casting of Henry. He is the perfect choice to don the cape and S shield.”
Christopher Nolan is shepherding the project along with Batman Begins and Dark Knight producers Charles Roven and Emma Thomas as well as Deborah Snyder. The screenplay is being written by David S. Goyer based on a story by Goyer and Nolan.
Recently, Cavill finished production on The Cold Light of Day with Bruce Willis and Sigourney Weaver. He’ll next be seen in Tarsem Singh’s The Immortals which opens in the fall.
The new Superman movie will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures in December 2012.
