Javier Bardem Offered Role in New Bond Pic

Casting News, News

Deadline is reporting that Javier Bardem has been offered a role in the upcoming (and still untitled) 23rd James Bond film.

The role is unspecified, but the article suggests that it is a major part so speculation inevitably leads to Bardem as the film’s villain. If that proves to be true, Bardem would be the second Oscar winner to square off against the secret agent after Christopher Walken did so in 1985’s A View to a Kill.

Daniel Craig will reprise his role as James Bond, and Judi Dench will be returning as M. Sam Mendes is still on as director and the script will be written by the team of Neal Purvis, Robert Wade and John Logan. Purvis and Wade have written four previous Bond adventures while Logan joins the creative staff having written screenplays for Gladiator and The Last Samurai in the past as well as the upcoming releases Rango and Hugo Cabret.

Plot details are sketchy at this point but the story is said to pick up after the events of Quantum of Solace.

Just because Bardem has received an offer does not necessarily mean he’ll commit to the role. He’s also been offered the lead in Ron Howard’s adaptation of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower. If he commits to that role, it would leave him little room to take on many other roles, considering that his work on Tower would involve both film and television.
