Big Love – Episode 5-4 Review

Reviews, Shows

When so many questions and accusations are thrown out in episodes of television like “The Oath,” I try to work things out in my mind as to who is in the right and who is in the wrong. Frankly, it’s hard to root for anyone. Bill calls the state senate hypocrites for turning their backs on the entire scripture, and it’s a fine point expressed with rousing vigor. But Bill is also a hypocrite, telling Margie to cover herself up when his goal is to have everyone be open towards polygamy, and Barb, and Margene, and Nicki.

To me the most troubling part of the episode is Margene, who was revealed last week to be 16 when she married Bill. The creep factor only increases when Margene expresses how she wanted a father figure. Of course that person was Bill, but he became her husband, not her father. We do get the impression, heavily suggested by Barb and Nicki, that Bill was really, really into Margene, and if take that combination of factors in simple terms, basically Margene was looking for a father and Bill was looking for sex.

Despite the continuing turmoil in the episode, the family comes together in the end as the entire family, minus Sarah and Teeny, goes to watch Bill’s triumphant swearing in. Now that that has happened, though, Bill faces an uphill battle against people who are ready for impeachment.

Score: 9.0/10
