The Big orange Guy’s Top 5 Injuries of 2010

Top Story

Pitchers and catchers have finally reported.  The stories are already making headlines.  Albert Pujols did not get an extension.  Miguel Cabrera had an interesting night with the law, Ken Griffey is back as a consultant, the Mets’ ownership and Bernie Madoff seem to be better friends than any of really knew and we have not even had all players report to camp yet.  Me? I have had the flu for the past week.  So, I got to thinking about if the flu could land someone on the sidelines, what other injuries could land people on the sidelines.  I went through the baseball year 2010 and found what I have determined to be The Big Orange Guy’s Top 5 Injuries of 2010.

#5 – Carl Crawford – Testicular Contusion

Carl Crawford was leading off of first base.  On a pickoff attempt by Jake Arrieta, the errant throw hit Crawford in a very gentle place.  Crawford was tagged out as he writhed in pain for a couple of minutes and was removed from the game with a contusion of the testicles.  Crawford, after the play, admitted that he does not wear a protective cup.  After calling the incident a fluke, Crawford indicated “I’m still not gonna wear a cup.”

#4 – Chris Coghlan – Torn Meniscus

The 2009 Yankees, besides winning the World Series, made the “pie in the face” for the walk-off hit a popular event.  On a July game, the Marlins’ walk-off victory after a pinch-hit by Wes Helms, Coghlan tore the meniscus in his left knee while throwing a shaving cream pie in the face of Helms.  In his own words after the injury, “When I jumped, I landed wrong on my knee. That’s how I got injured.”

#3 – Geoff Blum – Arthroscopic Elbow Surgery

This one is quick.  While getting dressed after a game against the Padres, Geoff Blum was putting on his shirt.  While putting on this dangerous shirt, he felt a “pop” in his elbow.  Doctors found “loose bodies” in his elbow and he needed surgery to clean up his elbow.  Reports were that Blum forgave the shirt for his injuries.  He was placed on the 15-day disabled list.

#2 – Russell Branyan – Injured toe

At 5 in the morning, Russell Branyan was in his hotel room.  He woke to close the curtains in his room.  Somehow the table attacked his foot, or he kicked it over while walking to the curtains.  The table’s attack left Branyan’s toe bruised and bleeding.  Branyan missed a couple of games as he claimed defeat to the table and curtains.

#1 – Kendry Morales – Broken Leg

In the most popular of post-game walk-off injuries, Kendry Morales was celebrating his May 29th walk-off grand slam.  As we all have seen, Morales jumped in the air to land on home plate with both feet, and as he hit the plate he landed incorrectly and broke one of his legs.  He was out the remainder of the season.

There you have it, my favorite Top 5 Injuries of 2010.  There are many, many more I could have written about but these are my favorites.  What are yours?  Let me know what you think.  See you all next week!
