Let’s say you knew nothing about the plot of a movie and could only rely on the cast list. Do you think you could determine if a movie was going to be good or bad just on the cast alone? No need to answer; it’s a hypothetical question.
Sebastian Gutierrez had been making a living in Hollywood for years as a screenwriter, working on The Big Bounce, the short-lived Karen Sisco TV series and Snakes on a Plane. In 2009, he added director to his title when he helmed a feature entitled Women in Trouble, a film about a single day in the lives of ten different women who share one thing in common: trouble. Their professions ranged from porn star and flight attendant to psychiatrist and call girl. Though not an expensive production, Gutierrez was able to recruit a number of familiar faces, beginning with his girlfriend Carl Gugino.
The cast also included Adrianne Palicki (of TV’s Friday Night Lights and soon to be Wonder Woman), Connie Britton (also on Friday Night Lights and Spin City), Simon Baker (TV’s The Mentalist), Emmanuelle Chriqui (TV’s Entourage), Marley Shelton (Grindhouse), Josh Brolin and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
The sequel, Elektra Luxx, arriving in theaters on March 11th, was produced the following year and featured many of the names listed above and also added Kathleen Quinlan (Apollo 13), Lucy Punch (Dinner for Schmucks), Timothy Olyphant (TV’s Justified), Vincent Kartheiser, Malin Akerman (Watchmen), Christine Lakin (TV’s Step By Step) and a special cameo appearance by Julianne Moore as the Virgin Mary.

Sebastian Gutierrez will be back in Austin again this year for South by Southwest as he presents Girl Walks Into a Bar, the first major motion picture with a cast of notable stars created exclusively for Web distribution. Cast highlights include Gugino, Zachary Quinto, Josh Hartnett, Danny DeVito, Rosario Dawson, Amber Valletta, and Alexis Bledel.
