Neill Blomkamp’s Elysium Gets a Release Date

News, Projects

In theatrical release news, Sony Pictures has announced that the release of Neill Blomkamp’s next project, Elysium, will arrive in theaters on March 8, 2013.

Two years ago, his debut feature District 9 was a late summer release that became one of the surprise hits of the year. With a great marketing campaign that included “Humans Only” billboards, banners, posters, and stickers, the $30 million film would go on to gross $210 million worldwide as well as be nominated for four Academy Awards, including Best Picture.

In Elysium, the story is set in the far future on another planet, and will use “many sociopolitical ideas, wrapped up inside something that is like a Hollywood action film”. Unlike District 9, Peter Jackson will not serve as a producer.

When describing Elysium, Blomkamp insists that it will be “violent, very violent, and very unique hopefully.”

One of the first names attached to the project was Sharlto Copley, who starred in Blomkamp’s District 9. Jodie Foster and Matt Damon are also slated to star in the film. Recently, it was announced that Brazilian actor Wagner Moura, who starred in Elite Squad, has been tapped to play the villain.
