Death Of Osama Could Lead To A Pair Of Hunt For Bin Laden Films

News, Projects

On the heels of the reported death of Al Queda leader Osama Bin Laden is news that Hollywood had been planning to bring the hunt for Bin Laden to the big screen. Deadline Hollywood has learned that Kathryn Bigelow, Oscar-winning director of the heralded film The Hurt Locker, has been prepping an indie movie with the working title Kill Bin Laden. Also, a major Hollywood studio was planning a movie project about the hunt for Bin Laden, but the production stalled back in 2006.

With the news of Osama Bin Laden’s death, if a project or projects were to occur within the next year, it would be the timeliest films for Hollywood as it is now. Another film that’s already in development is Horse Soldiers from producer Jerry Bruckheimier.

Written by Doug Stanton, and titled Horse Soldiers: The Extraordinary Story of a Band of US Soldiers Who Rode to Victory in Afghanistan, the non-fiction work is a dramatic account of a small band of Special Forces soldiers who secretly entered Afghanistan following 9/11 and rode to war on horses against the Taliban. Outnumbered forty to one, they pursued the enemy army across the mountainous Afghanistan terrain and, after a series of intense battles, captured the city of Mazar-i-Sharif, which was strategically essential to defeat their opponent throughout the country.

As far as Kill Bin Laden goes Bigelow indicates that the movie planned was based on an earlier unsuccessful mission to try to kill the Al Qaeda leader responsible for the 9/11 terrorist attack on America as he hid in the border region between Pakistan and Afghanistan. It looks like they’ll go in a different direction now that recent developments provide a more fitting Hollywood ending. Details about this film are still sketchy, but there is word that Megan Ellison, daughter of Oracle chief Larry Ellison, is ready to fund the production. As far as lead actors, Bigelow and Mark Boal, her collaborator on The Hurt Locker were looking to court Joel Edgerton, who had recently been in the mix for The Bourne Legacy and will next be seen in the fall release Warrior.
