Kue’s Korner: Arriving in Autotune; Pay-Per-Refreshes (WWE, TNA)

Columns, Top Story

Hola, mi amigos. Welcome one and all to my lovely haven known as Kue’s Korner. I’m your resident Korner holder, Jonah Kue, and this week, your host has been exhausted due to a hectic schedule. Also, I’ve been concocting something new for us ‘rasslin’ fans. You’ll find it in video form under “Jonah’s Jumpstart”. So, let’s not waste any time, ladies and gents.

Total Nonstop Articulation

I suppose it wasn’t too much to ask for. TNA churned out a passable PPV this Sunday. And they did this simply by following through on their new creed: wrestling matters again. Now, given the matches weren’t stellar by any means, they still delivered in terms of decent wrestling.

What worries me through this new sense of direction the company has acquired is the potential for the storylines to suffer. One of the main issues from TNA is the complete lack of logic in the build ups and feuds occurring currently (Tara’s indecision to help Mickie James, Dreamer actually being booked to go over Styles, Sting and Anderson…that’s all I’ve gotta say). Hopefully, the focus on actual matches will help simplify the already-overbooked angles, ridding them of these ridiculous storyline attachments, rather than the loss of focus on the writing leading to something even more moronic. My optimism is heavy on this one. If this really is the direction TNA is going, we may yet have a decent company coming out of the muck that’s been defining TNA for the past God knows how long. A phoenix of sorts, if you will.

So, Jean Grey this bitch, guys.

Blue Streak

Smackdown is exemplary in what is needed to create a perfect turn: pacing. I think anyone with a sense of smell can get the scent of Christian’s upcoming heel turn. This past Smackdown, there seemed to be no animosity between our Captain Charisma and Mr. Orton. Which only means that this is mirroring the paced heel of CM Punk. Which only means that this has the potential to cultivate a phenomenal heel. And what better way for Christian to establish himself as the top heel on the blue brand than going over the numero dos face in the company? Exactly.

I thoroughly enjoyed Sin Cara/ Daniel Bryan, but the lighting basically gave away the ending. This makes me both optimistic about Sin Cara and worried about Daniel Bryan’s status turning into weekly jobber. I realize several people have been clamoring for Sin Cara/Mysterio, but a program with Chavo will be far more entertaining, as Chavo isn’t as worn down as Mysterio is. And when these two luchadors hit the ring against each other, I have no doubt it will be exceptional.

Not sure how long the Corre feud with Zeke is going to last, but at the very least, it should bring some interest back to the IC title, should they focus some of the story on it. Barrett has a chance to stand out in this generation of wrestlers as the guy to bring a semblance of relevance to the mid card belts with several programs and defenses, and I can’t think of a better starting story or opponent than the one he has laid in front of him at the moment.

Concerns have arisen about Cody, folks. Gojira’s Stomping Ground this past week spoke of the dangers of having too many heels in one show, and Rhodes is definitely suffering from it. And the fact that they gave away a golden ready-made feud between him and DiBiase this past Friday just makes me think that Creative is relying solely on Rhodes’ heat to carry him. This is a mistake that will cost Cody severely. Like I always say, first build character, then build a feud. You need both. Rhodes, now more than ever, needs the latter.

Seeing Red

Oh, look. Generic John Cena promo involving bad comedy and a quick turn to dramatic confrontation. This basically sets the precedent for a Cena win this upcoming PPV (as if the “I Quit” stipulation didn’t already). The sooner the Miz is out of this feud, the better for him. This dullness may spill over to him via guilty by association.

So, the Nexus seems to be getting a spark back into it. It was good to see a decent match between Punk and Kingston. It was even better to see Punk promise a dominant Nexus, and delivering in the tag match against Kane/Show. Let’s hope this is a continuing trend.

Kharma’s arrival has brought excitement back into the Diva’s division. Her continuing obsession/program with Kelly Kelly is bringing something back that hasn’t been a part of the division in a long time: intrigue. Let’s hope this goes far from the rape/drug path of Winter/Angelina Love. For the love of God, let’s hope so.

It’s exceptional how each week, Truth seems to get better and better. His promos, anyway. His ring weaknesses are nothing new, but hopefully a heel moveset will be a difference maker. I’m all smiles about this, compadres.

Del Rio, however, is suffering from the same thing Rhodes is: lack of a feud. Let’s fix this quick, Creative.

Please, please, for the love of all that’s good, just let this Cole/King thing end this Sunday.

Oh, look, Cena buries somebody going into a PPV. Yep. Cookie cutter. And the cookies taste stale.

Round the Bend

We’ve got a diverse group of topics on the Pulse this past week.

CB’s World revolves around the concept of blowing up the Cole Mine this week. And logically so.

Get your fill of TNA Sacrifice from Blair’s That Being Said. And for those who think he’s basically hating on the show, you’ll be surprised by his unbiased analysis of the PPV.

The Quotable Writer of the Week, Miss Kelly Floyd, brings in some analysis of EXW Adrenaline Rush.

Goji’s analysis of the overabundance of heels is a very relevant read. Check out the Stomping Ground.

Yours truly’s P.I.C. goes in depth about a topic near and dear to me: the mid card titles. Check out Rhett Davis’s The O’Really Report.

Joel Leonard analyzes the different booking of Christian/Orton and R-Truth on No Chance.

And Mr. Sanders’ The Rager speaks of one of my favorite new heels, R-Truth.

Klosing Thoughts

These May PPVs seem to have a different goal than what PPVs have traditionally set out to do. Instead of being a list of payoffs, we’re getting PPVs that are building towards the future. “Sacrifice” has set TNA to carry their newly established motto as far as they’ll allow themselves to carry it.

“Over the Limit” seems to have the same potential of lighting a fuse rather than being the actual boom (is it okay for me to make a bomb reference by now?). Christian’s heel turn, Truth’s first feud as a heel, Zeke/Barrett, etc. set the stage for a definite “to be continued” theme for this upcoming Sunday. I don’t necessarily think this is a bad thing, as both companies need a good refresh. I do hope that this isn’t the trend of PPVs, however, and I do also hope that the refreshes serve their purpose in a positive way.

Adieu.

I like my wrestling almost as much as I do my coffee. And I do love my coffee, as you can tell how much it's affected my skin tone.
