Sequel to The Fighter Happening Per Mark Wahlberg, Troops Thanked

The one complaint boxing fans could have about The Fighter as a biopic of Micky Ward was that it didn’t cover the biggest fights of his career against Arturo Gatti. The Gatti fights, which earned Fight of the Year from Ring Magazine in 2002 and 2003 for the first and third fights respectively, defined both men’s careers and weren’t covered.

That will be rectified as a sequel to the hit film will cover those areas per Mark Wahlberg at the Spike TV Guy’s Choice Awards. Although plans for the sequel haven’t been announced officially by anyone involved, it is a curious choice to proclaim.

What does it mean? Mark Wahlberg is a smart man, and not including that particular era of Ward’s career did leave the film feeling a bit unfinished, but going back to finish the job sounds all sorts of bad. The problem now is that Melissa Leo, Amy Adams and Christian Bale might not be available for a sequel and those three helped define The Fighter into what it was and all three earned Oscar nominations for their parts.

Bale and Leo walked away with trophies, as well, and considering how tough the first was to get into production this might be a case of Wahlberg biting off more than he can chew. Micky Ward finished up his career against Gatti and this just smacks of him looking for a Rocky type franchise at worst or admitting he made a mistake the first time around. Either way it’s not the best idea out there for Wahlberg, especially with Entourage wrapping up its series run this summer and being prepped for a film franchise ala Sex and the City.

What do you think? Is this a good idea? Or is the logical step after Ward-Gatti gets to the screen in The Fighter 2 for Mark Wahlberg to go to Russia and fight Ivan Drago on Christmas Day?
