News, Results, Top Story

Tonight, UFC 131 originates from the Rogers Arena in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada with a big heavyweight encounter. Shane Carwin, who stepped in for Brock Lesnar, will take on Junior dos Santos in a number one contender’s bout for a UFC Heavyweight title shot at Cain Velasquez.

Our UFC live coverage starts at 8 PM ET for the Spike TV preliminary fights and the pay-per-view coverage will commence at 9 PM ET.

Hi everybody, this is Chris Roberts, and welcome to our live coverage for UFC 131 which is being broadcast around the world live from Vancouver home of the soon to be Stanley Cup Champion Canucks. We are being treated to a card tonight that obviously will be notorious for not featuring Brock Lesnar but nonetheless features a strong enough main event in Junior Dos Santos vs. Shane Carwin in a fight to determine who will battle the injured heavyweight champ Cain Velasquez once he returns to action. The rest of the main card in fairly weak (Vagner Rocha? Dave Herman?), but is semi-compensated by a stronger than usual prelim card.

Featherweight Bout
Darren Elkins (11-2) vs. Michihiro Omigawa (12-9-1)

Round 1– Elkins showing more willingness to throw early. He isn’t landing much, a shot here or there but nothing to speak of. Omigawa is playing it safe, laying back, pure boxing match going on thus far and Elkins is in control. More boxing, both fighters land a shot simultaneously. Omigawa comes in hard, Elkins bearhugs him and takes him down. Omigawa tries for a leglock, Elkins escapes and stands back up. Elkins hits a one two combo. Elkins comes in hard and hits another combo. Rogan just referred to Omigawa as the aggressor which is baffling to me. Elkins goes for four more consecutive combos. He hands a few of the shots. Elkins goes for a single leg take down but can’t secure it. The round ends. 10-9 Elkins despite what Mr. Rogan may have seen.

Round 2– A big slugfest to start. Neither fighter gains a significant advantage. Elkins seems to have been cut above his right eye, they’re bleeding but not excessively. Combo from Elkins. Elkins grabs Omigawa but Omigawa hands a shot. Elkins is leaning hard on the punching combos. Omigawa goes for a takedown, no go though. More boxing, Elkins is landing for sure but they don’t seem to be hurting Omigawa at all. Beautiful shot from Omigawa to Elkins jaw. More boxing, Omigawa doing a good job of avoiding the shots coming in from Elkins. The actions slows near the end of the round. Elkins comes in kind of desperately for a takedown diving for the leg but not securing. The round ends. Very close, I’d call it a draw if I could but I will go 10-9 Omigawa.

Round 3– Jab from Omigawa lands early. Straight away they right back to boxing. Omigawa though breaks up that monotany by scoring a takedown. He finds himself in Elkins full guard. Elkins seems content to hold him down and try for the stand up. Omigawa lands a right but on the whole Elkins is defending well. Elkins starts to bleed from the head. Omigawa tries to take the back but can’t do so and they end up back in the stand up. Elkins face is a mess. We find ourselves back watching a boxing match. Elkins lands a hook. Big hook on the chin for Omigawa. Elkins keeps going with the combos and as usual he is landing a shot here and there but nothing that is going to end a fight. Only 30 seconds left and all of a sudden Elkins has gone cautious. I guess he feels comfortable with his scorecard as he coasts across the finish line. I’ll say 10-9 Omigawa giving him a 29-28 victory on the Inside Fights scorecard.

Darren Elkins def. Michihiro Omigawa via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 30-27)

Heavyweight Bout
Joey Beltran (12-5) vs. Aaron Rosa (16-3)

Round 1– Feeling out process early on. Beltran lands a few tentative shots then goes for a takedown. Rosa is a huge boy and does not go down. Instead they end up tried up along the fence. They break and Beltran uses the chance to land some big shots to Rosa’s face. Beltran ties him up again and has some luck landing rights from the clinch. Rosa tries to neutralize but really doesn’t succeed. They break and a fantastic slugfest breaks out. Rogan makes a Rock Em Sock Em Robots reference and I concur. Big body kick from Rosa. Rosa charges in lands some shots tot he body. Inside leg kick from Beltran. Beltran lands a nasty shot to Rosa’s chin and follows it with an inside leg kick. Tie up on the cage yet again with Beltran in command. Beltran lands a few body shots and then an elbow to the chin. Near the end of the bell they come together for another insane slugfest. They are just standing toe to toe and beating the hell out of each other. 10-9 Beltran.

Round 2– Rosa opens with a jab and then backs Beltran up with some more shots. He’s certainly more aggressive this round than he was in the last. Nice combo from Rosa. Outside leg kick from Beltran and follows it with the best shot of the fight so far. Tie up on the cageRosa is trying to land shots to the head while Beltran is working the knees best he can. Beltran hits another big shot, this one a left hook. Rosa comes with a combo and a knee to the head attempt. More striking form both parties until Beltran slows things down by tying Rosa up. Rosa comes towards Beltran and Beltran just blasts him with a knee directly to the groin. On the way down Beltran adds another knee right to the face. Time is called and the doctor enters the cage. Rosa seems ready to roll though and they start again. Outside leg kick from Rosa and then he throws a head kick that misses. Rosa goes nuts and comes forward with a gigantic flurry of punches. He ties him up and starts throwing knees and wouldn’t you know it he returns the favor and pops Beltran right on the cup. Time again. On the restart they begin to box. Left hook for Rosa. Beltran pushes him up against the cage and they both start throwing punches. They break but quickly find themselves back in the same position. The bell sounds and Beltran gets one more in for good measure. Razon thin margin but I’m going 10-9 Rosa.

Round 3– Rosa pops Beltran with a few shots early. Rosa charges with a takedown attempt, no luck and very nearly has to eat a knee. Rosa hits a big punch. Beltran begins to unload however and works Rosa down to his knees. From there Beltran really begins to unload and nearly ends the fight. Rosa survives, barely, and breaks away from the violence. Beltran, however, gets an immediate takedown and begins to work some ground and pound magic, elbows and hammerfists and the ref has no choice but to step in and call the fight. Rosa is left a bloody mess in the center of the cage.

Joey Beltran def. Aaron Rosa via TKO- Round 3 (1:26)

Featherweight Bout
Dustin Poirier (9-1) vs. Jason Young (8-3)

Round 1– Leg kicks from both partiers to start. Poirier drives in hard and lands some big shots on the Brit. He goes for the takedown and Young counters by attempting a standing kimura. Tie up and a knee from Young. THey lock each other up and the pace slows to a crawl. Knee from Poirier and he parlays that into a big combo in which he pounds Young right in the face. Inside leg kick from Poirier. Another. He goes for the head kick but it is blocked. Flying knee from Young is blocked, Poirier responds with an uppercut and a series of wild shots. More kicks from Poirier. Young tries for a homerun shot but misses by a mile. Young goes for a head kick but slips. Poirier takes advantage and lands some sharp shots to the body. Young gets a few punches in near the end of the round. The horn sounds and I’m saying 10-9 Poirier.

Round 2-Inside leg kick from Poirier, returned by Young. Double round kick from Young does not land. Spinning wheel kick from Young also misses. Lots of misses thus far this round. Finally Poirier lands a clean shot and it is to a kick to Young’s groin. After the restart a few jabs for Poirier. Inside leg kick from Young. Young is bringing the heat this round. More leg kicks and they seem to be slowing Poirier. Jab from Poirier but it allows Young to return with a leg kick. ANother leg kick for you know who. Big series of strikes from Young which concludes with a nice looking uppercut. Poirier starts to turn it up himself landing a few nice shots but everything he lands seems to be returned immediately. Young has a cut and it is starting to leak. Young comes in with a flying knee, blocked by Poirier and as Young turns around he clocks him with a hook. Slugfest, Poirier gets a takedown and lays on him until the end of the round. 10-9 Young in another crazy close round.

Round 3– Jab from Young to start that mildly staggers Poirier. Time is called due to excessive Vaseline on Young’s cut. Poirier throws a few big shots and then grabs him in a Thai clinch. Poirier presses him hard up against the cage and begins to work extremely hard for a takedown. Young defends it well and Poirier seems to be stuck. Finally Poirier gets the takedown which was a very long time coming. Young stands up, Poirier takes him down again but Young just stands up again. 2 minutes left and the combatants continue to grapple. ANother slo-mo takedown for Poirier. Young begins working the short elbows to the top of Poirier’s head. Elbows to the body for Young. Young is up and down and Poirier will not let go and Young cannot break free. 30 seconds left and Poirier moves into Young’s guard. Both fighters are throwing and Young is having luck which should make the judging very difficult. I’ll go 10-9 Poirier giving him the fight 29-28 on the Inside Fights scorecard.

Dustin Poirier def. Jason Young via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28)

Middleweight Bout
James Head vs. Nick Ring (11-0)

Round 1– This is a very interesting fight for me. Leg kick from Ring to start. And then some more. Ring grabs the clinch quickly and then goes for some knees. Head hits a nice jab to the face. Ring moves in but Head catches him with an uppercut. Ring moves in and gets an attractive takedown and moves into side control. Ring works the short elbows but not much else. He moves to North South but Head shakes him off and Ring has to stand up, Head follows him. Ring goes in for a takedown but Head nails him with a fist that staggers and drops Ring. He piunces but not fast enough to finish. In the stand up Head gets the clinch and starts going for knees. Ring recovers and starts throwing punches of his own. Ring blocks a head kick but eats a hook. They tie up and Ring scores another takedown. Ring is in the half guard but again is not staying very busy from the top. The round ends with Ring throwing a few ground and pound punches. Again, I would say tie but I can’t so instead let’s say 10-9 Head.

Round 2– Ring gets a takedown early, Head tries to counter it but Ring remains in control . He’s back in side control and locks Head in a North South triangle. He loses it a few seconds later but remains in side control. Ring starts raining down shots to the body of Head. Ring moves into half guard and tries to land short elbows. Head plays his cards wisely and gets a standup. Ring gets another single leg takedown. He seems to be moving in slow motion but Head doesn’t have an answer for it. Full guard for Head and Ring is able to plow through it and just pounds him with elbows opening Head’s head up. He jumps on his back and tries for the rear naked choke but Head shakes him off over the top and takes top control. They stop the right to check on the cut which is on the bridge of the nose. It is a nasty one but the doctor and Herb Dean allows it to continue. They restart in the same position which was Ring in side control. Ring goes right back to the elbows. Ring is happy to stall the fight in this position and catch his breath. Head is leaving a disgusting blood stain on the mat. More ground and pound from Ring and the round comes to a close. 10-9 Ring.

Round 3– Neither fighter really wants to come forward early on. There is some light boxing until Ring gets a very easy takedown. He’s in the full guard. RIng tries for some shots for the top and has some limited success. Ring stands up and lands a shot to the grounded head. RIng regains control and starts landing even more elbows to the face. The fight has become very lopsided very quickly. Ring stands up but then quickly goes back down to side control. Head is preventing him from finishing the fight but anything else Ring wants he is able to take. Head is getting pummeled and I’m sure Dean is thinking about calling this contest. Ring grabs a rear naked choke out of nowhere and Head submits almost immediately. Good comeback for Ring after a very underwhelming opening frame.

Nick Ring def. James Head via Submission (Rear Naked Choke)- Round 3 (3:33)

He cannot keep Soszynski down however. Leg kick for Soszynski. Massenzio tries another takedown but Soszynski sprawls and defends. Massenzio tries for another takedown but is stuffed, Soszynski then tees off and hits two nice shots. The round ends, no clear winner as nobody did anything of note. 10-9 Massenzio.

Round 2– Again Massenzio tries for the takedown but he ends up simply pressing Soszynski into the cage. Not much happening early on. They fall to the mat, grappling one another. Soszynski looks for a guillotine but we can’t tell how deep it is. He releases the hold and slugs Massenzio in the side. Soszynski starts landing knees to the shoulder of a grounded Massenzio making the ref very nervous. Back on their feet Soszynski hits a knee from the clinch. Again the action stalls. Massenzio hits a few shots and then tries for another takedown but Soszynski sprawls away from it and takes control of the fight. Left hook from Massenzio somewhat lands. Soszynski lands one of his own. Takedown attempt from Massenzio but he is only able to tie Soszynski up on the cage. He pushes and pushes and since Soszynski is Canadian the crowd is giving this snoozer a free pass. They get a stand up and start to box. Round 3– Leg kick from Soszynski and then the fighters tie up. Soszynski starts to unload. Massenzio drops down but Soszynski takes his back. Massenzio is unable to do much to slow the suffering he is going through. Another couple knees, Massenzio is hanging on for dear life to Soszynski’s wrist. Soszynski switches back to the knees to the body. Soszynski goes for a bulldog choke finish but Massenzio breaks free and starts throwing leather. They tie up and the ref quickly splits them up. Takedown try for Massenzio, doesn’t work out. The round and fight end with a whimper. 10-9 Soszynski. That gives him the 29-28 victory on the Inside Fights scorecard.
