Rock of Ages could go one of two ways. It’s odd enough that it could just catch fire and be one of those quirky summertime hits in June 2012. It could also be bad, like really bad. Adam Shankman, a jack of all trades in Hollywood, having done everything from choreography (Congo? Tank Girl? WTF?), script doctoring and directing (Hairspray).
The casting of his latest, Rock of Ages, based on the award-winning Broadway musical, is all over the map with the likes of Alec Baldwin, Russell Brand, and Paul Giamatti. Oh, and some actor named Tom Cruise.
Tom Cruise will play Stacee Jaxx in the film, and if the promo picture at his website is any indication, Cruise shows once again that he doesn’t do anything half-assed. No cruise control for this guy. The guy definitely looks like an ’80s rocker. Or it could just be Cruise with longer hair, fake tattoos, wailing into a microphone. Video may have killed the radio star, but will the casting help or hurt this Broadway adaptation?
Rock of Ages also co-stars Malin Akerman, Julianne Hough, Mary J. Blige, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Bryan Cranston. Be sure to have those lighters ready for those monster ballads when the the film rocks theaters on June 1, 2012.
