MGM To Reboot WarGames

News, Projects

MGM, which only a few months ago got a $500 million capital boost and then took that to help with the production of a new James Bond feature and co-financed The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and 21 Jump Street, looks to mine its library in search of new ways to make older releases relevant to a new audience. Ah, the remake, reboot, press the reset button and see what happens. One of the features they are looking at is the 1983 thriller WarGames starring Matthew Broderick and Ally Sheedy.

Seth Gordon, helmer of King of Kong, Four Christmases and the upcoming release Horrible Bosses, has been hired to direct.

If you remember the original WarGames then you know it was a Cold War tale about a supercomputer (J.O.S.H.U.A.) running a nuclear war simulation that nearly starts World War III. It might be a hard sell with today’s youth demographic to follow the same approach, because if it is still going by the notion of pitting two superpowers against one another, the only countries that come close are the United States and China. And when you consider the changes that had to be made to the still unreleased remake of Red Dawn (where a Chinese invasion of America had to be changed to North Koreans), a U.S.-China nuclear simulation seems unlikely.

This announcement to reboot WarGames is in line with MGM’s strategy to remake a number of its ’80s catalog titles, including Mr. Mom, as well as the still-gestating reboots of RoboCop (at one time Daren Aronofsky was set to direct) and Poltergeist.
