10 Thoughts on WWE Smackdown 07.01.2011 – Randy Orton, Sheamus, Sin Cara vs. Christian

Reviews, Shows, Top Story, TV Shows

Hey everybody, time for another 10 Thoughts on SmackDown. I know I’m not who you’re used to seeing, but I figured I could contribute more by doing some wrestling columns, so it looks like I’ll be covering SmackDown for a while. I’ve been writing for Pulse Sports for a while now, but I thought I’d try my hand in writing about pro wrestling.  I’ve been a lifelong wrestling fan, and it’s awesome to be writing for Pulse Wrestling now. Without further ado, here we go with my 10 thoughts on this week’s Smackdown!

1. It seems to me that this angle between Christian and Teddy Long is really blurring the lines between face and heel. Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t it usually the HEEL screwing the FACE over? It’s hard for fans to boo Christian if his complaining has ANY sense of legitimacy, isn’t it?

2a. Orton’s nose was a little bloody in his match with Henry…how long until Orton’s calling for his firing like he did with Kennedy/Anderson? Maybe it won’t happen…Henry’s been around for 15 years, I believe, so maybe he has tenure or something.

2b. The segment with Mark Henry destroying the equipment table, then tossing the tech was a nice touch, given the ending of the match…and the fact that there was no music for the beginning of the Daniel Bryan/Ted DiBiase match made it more believable. Props to whoever had that idea.

3. Is it just my imagination, or is the “kick to the face” spot a tad bit overused in the WWE?

4. OK, so that’s where they’re going with the Great Khali/Jinder Mahal angle…kinda sounds like something out of a soap opera, but the only problem with it is, neither Khali nor Mahal are exactly good wrestlers, so they have to play this one perfectly if they want this angle to get over with the fans.

5. Sin Cara/Christian was one of the longer matches they’ve given away on free TV in a while. While enjoyable, it seemed like Christian was getting beat for most of the match, and that the two just don’t have much chemistry in the ring. For SmackDown though, not a bad match.

6. Looking at the Cody Rhodes/Ezekiel Jackson match, I came to a realization: Ezekiel Jackson isn’t exactly the best wrestler the WWE has, but that’s the point. It looks as if he’s supposed to be just a raw-boned powerhouse that doesn’t have much in the way of finesse, but a lot in the way of brute strength. A guy like that isn’t the best wrestler out there, but he’s still got a job because he does said job well.

7. One summer, Wade Barrett’s involved in the hottest angle WWE had put out in a while with the Nexus, and the next, he’s losing to Kane. Yes, he’s had the Intercontinental title, but that’s being used just as a prop now. Oh, how quickly one can fall in WWE.

8. Why do I get this feeling that the “IMMEDIATE rematch” clause in this Orton/Christian match would mean as in, Christian gets screwed, and the match restarts on the same PPV, leading to an RKO and a clean 3-count?

9. The part during the contract signing where Christian’s pen ran out of ink was a nice touch, and one you don’t see very often.

10. Sheamus’ involvement and tearing up the contract during the signing kinda reminded me of the WrestleMania 20 main event, where Shawn Michaels got involved by signing the contract himself…I wonder if the main event for Money in the Bank’s gonna end up as a triple threat. If it does, it does NOTHING to end this angle. In other words, I bet it’s going all the way to SummerSlam before we see the end.

In conclusion, not the best show I’ve seen, but certainly not the worst either.  It just seemed a standard WWE PPV/Raw shill, but it was passable. That’s all I’ve got for this week…I’m willing to answer any questions/discussions. I love discussing wrestling with fellow fans, and I hope you’ve enjoyed my first attempt at my 10 thoughts. Until next week…
